A Few Words About A few words about...™ Popeye the Sailor: The 1940s Volume 1 -- in Blu-ray

Well, the reason we are getting these is because it does appear that George Feltenstein prefers chronological releases. It's not a steadfast rule, but it tends to be the preference because Warner Archive tends to appeal more towards historians and archivists than anything as well as fans of the...

Warner Archive: Popeye the Sailor (1940s) First Volume on Blu-ray

Coloring is probably the only potential concern, but not a big one. Both because the WAC doesn't really do digital tinkering, and because these cartoons have never really looked good on home video. Some of these I have not seen at all, while others have some pretty poor transfers floating around

Warner Archive: Popeye the Sailor (1940s) First Volume on Blu-ray

I'm not really worried about cancellation, mainly because this is the Warner Archive, and I watched a lot and they tend to go out of their way to be as complete as possible and include some material that is outright racist. A decent chunk of their content is extremely obscure material, and its...

Warner Archive: Popeye the Sailor (1940s) First Volume on Blu-ray

This is definitely a more optimistic sign. Full restoration and continuing where the DVDs left off....10 years ago!! What's more shocking is that "Popeye a-la-Mode" was included. Tom & Jerry #2 being cancelled more or less broke me as far as having any faith that we would seen the classics...

    Charley Chase Vol. One 1930 - 1931

Update on the set: http://www.silentcomedymafia.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1982 TLDR: Wait for the official Amazon link to pre-order, which is forthcoming in the near future from the official Sprocket Vault Amazon account. This listing will contain all of the official details about the Charley...

Warner Archives Announces Porky Pig Collection 1934-1943

WBshop is typically the only place where you can get the pressed releases. Maybe other 3rd party sellers too but I cannot verify. Amazon is always burned. Maybe it's changed recently, but I tend to prefer the WAC burned discs over the Amazon ones since the amazon discs tend to have an...

The Naked Spur (1953)- coming from Criterion????

The telltale sign would be if the it was remastered in this streaming service. If it is the same old SD transfer, than a blu-ray would seem a long way off.

    Charley Chase Vol. One 1930 - 1931

While I agree that the attitude is probably more harmful than helpful, in the end it is just internet drama. The fact is, this set needs to be supported if we want other shorts to come out, this has to be supported. I never thought an official Hal Roach set would EVER come out, so I'm snapping...

Santa Fe Trail 1940, Errol Flynn

They haven't lost all rights for the film persay, it's just that most likely the source material's owner's are blocking it from distribution, either a past agreement or WB unwilling to pay royalties, etc Remember, if a movie is based on another work, the studio has to still be able to have...

    Charley Chase Vol. One 1930 - 1931

Yes, YES, very happy VCI is opening up those Hal Roach vaults. Perhaps this will lead to other Roach talkies being released, besides Laurel & Hardy and Our Gang? I certainly hope so

Warner Archives Announces Porky Pig Collection 1934-1943

Honestly, very happy with this news. These will honestly sell "well enough" and there are likely others character/themed sets in the works. I can only hope this means we will be seeing more MGM toons (minus T&J) and the color Popeyes. As for quality, the best ones are easily the Tashlin and...

High Noon (1952) (Blu-ray) Signature Edition Available for Preorder

So much for these Signature sets being "too expensive." No need to worry about the prices if this trend continues right before their release date.

    Criterion Blu-ray titles!

Assuming last new years' clue was intended, this is the last month for The Lion in Winter to get announced. This is still coming from Criterion, right?

Finders Keepers (1984) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

Haven't seen it myself, but this one seems to get a warmer reception than the likes of RAT RACE or MILLION DOLLAR MYSTERY. That last one I wonder if it will ever be given a digital release. It's generally most notable for including Jim Carey in his second screen appearance (minor role no doubt).

Certainly didn't expect this. Will be a real treat to finally get the original English version of this. Makes me wonder how many lost or semi-lost RKO films ended up PD as a result once they've been unearthed again. I'm assuming this new deal regarding "PD RKO films" is with Lobster films...

Oh, right, that was Fox. My mistake, no wonder I though they had some residual U.S. rights. Hopefully, Gatsby can come out of hiding one of these days though I'm afraid it may be a lost cause by now.

This is correct. As such, the deal only allows 3 of their films at the tail end of the decade to be included--Chicago Deadline, Dear Wife, and Samson & Delilah A few sound films escaped the MCA/Universal deal for one reason or another. My Friend Irma, Rope of Sand, Sorry Wrong Number, and The...

Thanks to the input. I figured the Euro cut would have a more noticeable difference since this was released in that Hammer period immediately following Curse of the Werewolf where the British Censor Board was seriously starting to lay down the gauntlet in terms of censoring any perceived...

Warner Archive Discussion Thread (The Announcements/The Films)

Hopefully this can be rectified. Normally, such a fix would be easy for MODs, but since this got pressed it might require separate disc replacement. That is if the WAC were willing to go through the extra legwork.

Wow! Never heard of this one. Must have been a rogue Republic library holding that fell through the cracks. Interested in seeing this even if it pales in comparison to the 30s movie, though I hope it does stack up. Too bad the title evokes that in-name-only postmortem Bruce Lee vehicle.

Think about the future generations that will appreciate a full cut, at the very least, give a chuckle at that extra bit of unnecessary cheese. It's what Terence Fisher and Michael Carreras would have wanted. The issue with When Dinosaurs Ruled the Earth had more to do with a clerical error...

Elizabeth Taylor, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood Legacy Collections from WB

I'll wait to see if there are improved transfers on some of these. Most of the Warner Archive inclusions were from the WAC's early years when they didn't do new remasters and used some fairly old transfers. Also hoping these have newer transfers for this set (Cynthia and Rhapsody come to...

International Napoléon (1927) finally arriving on BFI Blu-ray and DVD

My goodness! I'm kinda surprised I lived long enough to see this released or at the very least seen a release before the home rights to the film were taken to Coppola's grave. Might still be the case for North America, so I'm not taking any chances and am pre-ordering this ASAP

    Criterion Blu-ray titles!

Looks like it's entirely confirmed that Kino is dipping from the Republic library. Excellent! Keep those classics coming. The promise of silent is among the biggest surprises. Outside of Wings and a handful of Criterion releases, they've mostly been neglected.

Olive Films Signature: The Quiet Man / The Night of the Grizzly (Blu-ray)

Night of the Grizzly did look rather rough on the initial blu-ray. Glad to see there is an improvement, though it is certainly a different pedigree from The Quiet Man. On a side note, you can get the original blu-ray personally autographed by Clint Walker off of his website for less money...

Yes, Hondo is John Wayne Estate. Separate control over the elements and remastering. Also, I believe Bob mentioned that Money From Home is not in the cards due to a certain roadblock at Paramount despite the Lewis family allowing a 3-D restoration.
