    Oliver (1968)

I like the film quite a bit myself, but that doesn't change Brandon's objective statement that Oliver! is frequently derided as one of the worst films to win the Oscar for Best Picture. It simply is. That's a statement of fact. Many of us may disagree with that opinion, but it's out there and...

Blu-ray Review The Conversation Blu-ray Review

It's a very good transfer. Paramount does not have the rights. They reverted to Coppola's American Zoetrope who licensed it to Lionsgate.

^ Those are DVDs you are seeing, not Blu-rays. All the Universal DVD titles with 100th Anniversary packaging have a blue banner at the top.

Well, Paramount, you blew it for HATARI!

Hatari! is one of Paramount's most popular catalog titles?

But maybe Webster just copied it from the Frenzy credits! :D To clarify Nick's reference to intelligent vs. unintelligent apostrophes:

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ Patton -- in Blu-Ray

I'm guessing neither. There are too many extras on the current release for Twilight Time to try to make a go of a bare-bones release, and Franklin Schaffner hasn't signed anything in 23 years.

Criterion Press Release: The 39 Steps (Blu-ray)

I don't see anything in those posts to indicate that TCM is actually broadcasting high-def transfers.

PHE Press Release: Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol (Blu-ray)

I can't figure out why Amazon has the MSRP of the two-disc listed as $44.99 when the press release above clearly states it should be $29.99. The Best Buy exclusive version indeed seems to be the three-disc edition from the press release. Cancelled my Amazon order.

I'm assuming that it's the guy that Mr. Harris said was "calling the restorative shots" at Paramount in his few words about The Ten Commandments.

Blu-ray Review Atlas Shrugged: Part One Blu-ray Review

Exactly. Great actors work for scale all the time if they are interested in the material. The Ides of March cost $8 million less than Atlas Shrugged and starred George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Marisa Tomei, Jeffrey Wright, and Evan Rachel Wood.

Thank you, David. Some great deals to be had. I'll be hanging on to my Criterion Straw Dogs, but for five bucks, I'll happily pick up the new Blu-ray too.

    Weekly RoundUp 10-18-2011

Do I understand correctly that I can bring in ANY commercially produced (non-porn) DVD and get $5.00 off any title from that website list? It doesn't have to be the same title on DVD as I'm buying on Blu-ray? And is it an additional $5.00 off the sale prices posted on the website? If so, that's...

    Criterion Press Release: Godzilla (Blu-ray)

I can't foresee bitrate being a problem. Criterion has put much more content a single disc before with fantastic results. For a recent example, take a look at Blow Out. It contains two feature films that are longer than the Godzilla pictures and over 90 minutes worth of video supplements...

    Criterion Blu-ray titles!

The Blu-ray transfer is notoriously awful. It's 1080i, full of combing, and basically just a DVD upconvert. The American version is from a 30-year-old master. Criterion is doing new 1080p transfers and will surely include more thoughtful supplements.

2010: The Year They Finally Got Blu-ray Right

Does Lionsgate really deserve any credit for the Apocalypse Now transfer? It was my understanding that Zoetrope handled the transfer and all of the production of the set themselves, at their own state-of-the-art post facilities, and Lionsgate just served as the hired-gun distributor. That's...

But anyone who chooses to pay $90 instead of $60 simply isn't very bright. Even if there is some reason that one cannot buy online, the set will be deeply discounted at Best Buy, Target, Costco, et. al. upon its release. This is one of those "deluxe collectors sets" packaged with a bunch of...

Criterion Press Release: The Thin Red Line (Blu-ray)

This is how rumors get started. "I heard a rumor that Malick didn't like the theatrical cut..." Then it gets repeated enough times and eventually becomes a "fact." It has become more pervasive with The Thin Red Line because of all of the name actors who had their screen time cut down...
