I have repeated 4k freeze on many discs on my OPPO 203.

Waiting for my FFF on the way -- I don't see any online reviews yet though.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ Halloween III Season of the Witch -- in 4k UHD

EC Comics had some seriously violent and gruesome stories including killer Santas and axes in the head and razor blades in the hall...so I could see HIII fitting right in. Just re-watched the Amicus EC films (uncut) that are pretty fun and bloody for the day.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ Halloween III Season of the Witch -- in 4k UHD

Since I was a Fangoria kid, I knew what to expect and loved the idea as I hated HALLOWEEN II. I heard the confusion in the audience opening weekend but I loved it then and now. It's a truly subversive approach but the film and marketing should have let the audience know what was in store. It...

Pre-Order Legend (1985) Limited Edition (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

The US cut is literally edited like an MTV video and the International cut is not. So the US scenes actually lack flow and rhythm but I admittedly love the TD score minus the horrible Jon Anderson song at the end. The 2k looks amazing and every image is like a painting. What I miss in the US...

    Blu-ray Review Bugsy Malone – Blu-ray Review

Even as a geek kid I found this film's conceit so strange I could never gel to it despite liking the music and having a childhood crush on Jodi Foster. I questioned the premise of the splurge guns and the obvious editing used to make it work -- did the targets die or...? I remember when the film...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ A Clockwork Orange -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

And Scott complained that Kubrick took his most manic takes, the ones he didn't like, and used those in the film (to not always great effect as some of Scott's takes are exactly the kind of over the top style that would lead Kubrick to letting Nicholson chew through doors). Hayden works because...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ A Clockwork Orange -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

That's like saying "You can't criticize satire for being obvious!" And yeah, I consider SP easy obvious satire (puppets shitting themselves! Peter Jackson did it smarter). By that standard, all satire must be viewed uncritically. DR. STRANGELOVE is my peak film satire. ACO, with all its...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ A Clockwork Orange -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

So is the novel but minus the fish-eye grotesque lens of the other characters. And knowing Kubrick's work, Deltoid's overacting is just that. What POV is the writer's eyes bulging as Alex sings?

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ A Clockwork Orange -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

The irony is that yes, ACO is one of the most faithful book-to-film adaptations in terms of closely following scenes and of course the narration. BUT. The POV of the film is not Burgess but Kubrick. Look at the Cat-Lady who is shown as an aggressive loudmouth (as Pauline Kael rightly pointed...

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ A Clockwork Orange -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

When I was 15 and first saw ACO I thought it was brilliant. Over the years, I've come to dislike Kubrick's overplaying of all the actors, the peak of his worst instincts and the cheap easy answers as opposed to the novel. Now it's on my rung of Kubrick I never need see again while BARRY LYDON...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ Nashville (Paramount Presents) – in Blu-ray

I saw NASHVILLE with Altman in the audience at the Austin 1999 Film Fest. It just seems like one of the greatest American films ever made.

    A Few Words About A few words about…™ King Kong (1976) – in Blu-ray

I thought it looked fine and could only tell it was a TV scene usually by the fact I hadn't seen it before. There's only two scenes that should have been included, with Bridges telling Dwan that if Kong dies they can't be together and the badly filmed death of Grodin. Even as a kid in the...

3D Meet Bob Furmanek: HTF Golden Age 3-D Consultant

Can't wait for FFF 3D. I remember when it was re-released in the 80's 3D revival I missed it but my friends came to school babbling about the 3D guts. I first heard of Earl Owensby when 60 MINUTES did a cool profile of his production company in the early 80s! That would be a great feature on...

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

BTW, my first -- and last sci-fi convention was at Creation Con in 82 and the late actor who played Kirk's son was a featured speaker. He was great and the first thing he said was, "Yes, that was Ricardo Montalban's real chest." He talked a lot about the cut scenes. THIS. And the key thing is...

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

I hated the JJ Abrams reboots as they're made by somebody who has no feel for the show so yeah they were popular spectacles that few will want to revisit much in the future and also didn't create strong enough identities to build on. Where do you go with Scotty after hanging him off every...

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

Funny. I was 12 and recall the entire evening perfectly. So a post 1991 memory is hardly the best movie guide. Besides, I don't trust a Dalek to school anybody on ST:TMP. Have you seen DR. WHO AND THE DALEKS?

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

The oddest critique of ST:TMP might be "it's just blatant fan service" -- uh, who was the intended audience for a movie based on a cult series kept alive by fan service and a continuing film/TV series literally created because of fan service? I've stated over and over I found the TV show a bore...

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

I still think about watching ST:TMP as a geek/audience savvy 12 year old and even thinking at the time that the full theater was mostly bored including my crush/date until ALIEN. But it was an era where audiences were not 24/7 flooded with MTV cutting, state of the art fx and franchise building...

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

I'm just awaiting the scores of "WHY ST:TMP IS BETTER THAN YOU REMEMBER" and "TIME TO SHOW ST:TMP THE LOVE" articles after the 4k release. Trust me, they're coming.

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

I don't see how an intended scene is "questionable filmmaking" because you perceive it be slow. The film is indeed a long trek but that scene is a highlight and I doubt any real ST fan yawns in that scene.

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

People really seem to willfully miswatch this scene. It's a literal choreographed love dance to the fans for their show being released from drydock after their years and effort, which worked great on the screen to me as a 12 year-old non-fan. For me, ST:TMP of course lacks the warmth of the...

Pre-Order The Beastmaster (1982) (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

Despite my love of PHANTASM and having HBO, I have still never seen THE BEASTMASTER. But Coscarelli's in-depth account of its very flawed production in his recent book is great, as is the whole book. You'll tear up at the end.

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

I agree. Wise added stuff that should have been left in but cut down on too much that changed the stately tone. You can't really re-edit that out of the film. I know Shatner's "Oh my god" line was said to induce laughter at the preview and cut but it never bothered me and nobody laughed at my...

Pre-Order Star Trek: The Original 4-Movie Collection (4k UHD Combo) Available for Preorder

I will ignore people complaining about a release few thought would happen or that we would get both versions of ST:TMP in glorious 4K etc. This has always been my second favorite of the series, obvious flaws and all but no worse than some in the others. The epic Goldsmith score and Enterprise...

    Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ In Harm's Way – in Blu-ray

Typically overlong and overwrought Preminger (people complain about movie lengths today and it seems we've come full circle because 167 minutes of this back in the day would seem quite excessive for the material and in B&W after EXODUS -- I like to picture dressed up audiences in NY or Ohio...
