Austin - next HTF meet planning

Or, if you want to get really controversial, an SACD to analog (vinyl) comparison, using pressings of the same recordings, if we can round some up. -Rajiv

Austin - next HTF meet planning

I'd love to do blind comparisons of CD and/or SACD players, especially if anyone in the group has some high-end players. My DV-47A universal is already getting long in the tooth. :D -Rajiv

Austin - next HTF meet planning

I was out of town for the last meet :frowning:, but I will definitely attend this one! Count me in for the blind testing too. -Rajiv

    August Austin HTF meet.

Aug 23 works for me as well. I prefer the room acoustics topic, because it's an area I'd like to learn more. I am already pretty well set up with OTA and Directv HD. However, if that's the consensus, I'll go along without arm-twisting! -Rajiv

    Austin Movie Nights!

I haven't come up with a name yet. Suggestions welcome. I figured due to it's diminutive size, mine needs to be a "miniplex". -Rajiv

One other point - be aware that video editing and rendering the edited video for DVD are highly CPU-intensive, so a fast CPU would actually help. Still, a 2.4 or 2.53 GHz should still be pretty cheap. -Rajiv

    Austin DIY HT Projects

Nils, It's funny, I am just starting to get into DVD burning myself! I want to put my kids's 8mm and Digital 8mm videos on DVD. I've even picked up a bunch of stuff from Fry's last Friday that's waiting to be installed: a Firewire card for capturing video from my Digital8 camcorder, a...

    Austin DIY HT Projects

Nils, I am pretty happy with it. I use my "HTPC" exclusively for recording OTA HD material. I am using a Dell 4550 2.0GHz, 384MB RAM, with 140GB of disk. These puppies are ultra-quiet and make excellent HTPCs with the right graphics cards and DVDd drives. Since the MyHD card puts out HD on its...

Nils, I have the MyHD MDP-100 card in my HTPC. -Rajiv

Chad, It doesn't work! I've tried it. She still falls asleep! The AC works fine with 2-4 people in the room, but can't handle 15 people in that small space. I am drooling imagining how nice your HT is going to be. My main suggestions would be to invest as much attention to high-quality...

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Nils, Those chairs are where my wife and I collapse after a hard day of parenting 4- and 7-year old girls! They are called "zero-gravity" chairs, and we got them from Relax the Back. There may be other sources for them now - this was several years ago. I didn't get a chance to demonstrate how...

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Many thanks for the kind words and great advice from the learned crowd! It is clear that I have a significant room mode that needs to be tamed. Part of the problem, it turns out, was the fact that my subwoofer level was miscalibrated after all. I recently moved the sub to its current...

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Colin, I won't be able to make Friday night. I should be able to attend most of Saturday except the late nigtht portion. I am OK with you emailing addresses to the RSVPers. -Rajiv

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Fantastic! Just a procedural note - it's about a 20-25 minute drive from Lakeway to where I am, so the 15 minutes you have between Chad and myself may be a bit optimistic. But- if we keep this thing anywhere near on schedule, it'll be a miracle! The heck with schedules I say - let's just...

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Sorry Colin, but this'll have to change a bit. As I mentioned in one of my posts, I need to be in the "daytime" group, since I have little kids and cannot host in the evening. Also, I *do* have full light control, so can give up the Friday slot to someone who does not. Regards, -Rajiv

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Nils, no argument. Sounds like we may be down to a manageable number. Light control is a tricky issue. Having spent far more money than I anticipated on this aspect, I know what I would do if I were to start again. Assuming you want to go with "window treatments", i.e. you live with a...

    May Austin HTF Meet.

I'm torn. I hate to split this up over a month, especially since I am most likely not free on June 14th. On the other hand, anyone offering to be on the parade is graciously opening their homes for the group and it seems churlish to exclude anyone. For me, everyone's HT is "new" so I won't...

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I have reasonable light control, and would prefer to be earlier in the rotation, so we're done at my place by 6ish latest. Would someone like to map out an optimal route if we all sent him our addresses? -Rajiv

    May Austin HTF Meet.

Hello again, Sorry I've been unable to attend the last few meets, but I love the idea of the "parade of HTs." As long as it's not May 10th, I should be able to attend. I'll throw my hat into the ring and offer to add my HT to the parade - I'm in Great Hills. My HT is rather small (12'...

Time to plan the next Austin meet (September 2002)

Love the room measurement idea! This is an area in which I have not dabbled. In fact, the B&K has the ability to dial in a notch filter to tame the worst room mode, but I haven't figured out how to go about setting it. Maybe room measurements in the afternoon, and then kick back and have a...

Time to plan the next Austin meet (September 2002)

I love the comparisons, because it's something one can't do on one's own. For example, it would have been hard for any one of us to assemble the set of pre/pro's we had at the last meet for a comparison on our own. But, I'm up for something laid back too. There is something to be said for not...

Next Austin Meet: 13th or 20th?

Hey Colin, Let me know what you find out about that ISF calibration. I didn't get a chance to talk to you at the meet on Saturday. As a fellow 10HT owner, I wanted to hear what tweaking you'd done. I just finished up a Smart II calibration using a CC40R filter, and while I am please with...

Thanks y'all, I had a lot of fun. Frederick, thanks for hosting. I was real sorry to have to bail right in the middle of the pre/pro shootout. I hope someone will post the consensus of the group (if any) after the dust settles. For the record, I was pretty impressed with the Theta...

Frederick, What can I bring, food or drink-wise? As in, where are my manners? Also, I assume someone (Colin?) will be sending out directions at some point? I apologize if this is buried in the other thread, but can someone post the current summary of ancillary equipment we will be using...
