What was your very first movie on physical media purchase?

My mother purchased a Betamax as a present for the whole family for Christmas of 1981. Included with that she purchased cassettes of "Now Voyager" and "Barefoot In The Park", so those would be my first full movies on physical media. I say "full" because, as a kid, I would sometimes purchase...

Warner Archive Press Release: Mister Roberts (1955) (Blu-ray)

My copy of the DVD has been missing for several years. I was about to give in and buy another copy, so this upgrade is VERY welcome news.

    New OSCARS Category: "Popular Film"

Chris I could not agree more. I've enjoyed many a popcorn movie over the past decade, but not one of them has "stayed with me" like Jaws, for just one example. If big, popular films are going to get a nomination, then it should be because they are excellent films overall. It should not be...

    New OSCARS Category: "Popular Film"

    A Few Words About A few words about...™ 2001: A Space Odyssey -- in BD & HD

That standard screen looks impressive on it's own. And then the Cinerama screen comes out for a visit........:dancing-banana-04:

    Call Me By Your Name

"Call Me..." was my favorite film of last year. But as much as I loved it, I really don't see it needing a sequel. According to this recent interview with James Ivory, author Andre Aciman doesn't think it's going to happen...

    SMILEBOX

Yes, once. But they were showing an Imax film (not Omnimax) on it. I was not impressed. Unfortunately I never had the chance to experience an actual Omnimax film on that screen. Yes, same effect as the Death Star attack on the D-150 screen.

    SMILEBOX

I saw many a film in my local D-150 house, both 35mm (flat as well as scope) and 70mm. Everything always looked fantastic, but 70mm was most impressive. And scenes like the attack on the Death Star at the end of Return Of The Jedi actually felt like Cinerama. That curved screen gave me a sense...

Village of the Damned (1960)- coming from WAC

This will be a day one purchase for me, I love this film. But like you, I wish they would have included the sequel. I guess I'll be hanging onto the DVD.

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Will, I wish there was a button more than "like" that I could press concerning your statement. Love? Adore? Something like that. In any case thanks for your "liked" thoughts. :dancing-banana-04:

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Not to my knowledge. The picture and sound quality on the current blu-ray seem excellent to me, at least on my set up (50" panny plasma, Rotel amplifier with an Onkyo receiver as a pre-amp, and Definitive Technology speakers and subwoofer). Anyone know if there's going to be an official HTF...

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

It's still playing at the Paris in NYC. It felt strange but good to know that as I was seeing it at home on bluray there were people seeing it "with me" at the exact same time, in New York's last single screen movie house.

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Here in the northeast we're getting pummeled by the third late season nor'easter in less than two weeks. Originally I had planned on, after work, going to the nearby Best Buy to pick up my copy of Call Me By Your Name. Then the forecasts started. I chose to order through Amazon instead, I...

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Joel, less than 10 years ago I suddenly received a call from a good friend asking me to take him to the ER. The tone in his voice, well you can imagine. I'm extremely happy to say he's doing really well now. But I think of that night......... . In any case, yeah, The Normal Heart is excellent...

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Mark, I am just so sorry you had to go through that. There simply are no words. I think that, like you, I'm going to watch BPM eventually, but it's going to have to be at the right time. I'm still reeling from The Normal Heart (and that's almost four years ago)!

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Mark I just started reading the novel. To say Mr. Ivory did an amazing job of translating this work into a screenplay just might be the understatement of the year. I can't think of a more worthy recipient! Exactly Keith! This universality puts CMBYN up there with some of Hollywood's greatest...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ Aspect Ratios

The first Cinemark Theater in my area added one of their XD screens a few years ago. It's definitely big, but it's a 1.85:1 screen with no adjustable masking, and the blank screen during scope films just reminds me of old movie houses that were on their "last legs" back in the day. On a much...

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

Mark, thanks so much for sharing your analysis of CMBYN with all of us here. Two weeks after seeing it, that film is still very much on my mind. I still find it difficult to express all the ways this movie affected me. Reading the thoughts of others has definitely helped.

    Gay-Friendly Blu-rays

This reminds me of a story from a friend of mine. In the late '60's he worked at an old movie house that was showing a lot of "B" movies, often low budget teen beach flicks. On a quiet night he'd call up to the projection booth and tell the operator to go ahead and drop a real so they could all...

Colossus: The Forbin Project (1970) - coming from Scream Factory Feb 27, 2018

Thanks for the thread bump guys. Somehow I missed this announcement back in October. I never purchased the pan and scan dvd (it is pan and scan after all) so I've never owned it on disc, only......gulp......VHS! Looking forward to it!

Good article about Netflix's lack of classics -- Physical Media's continued relevance

Josh I think that's exactly the issue. As Leonard Maltin is quoted as saying in the article.... “Netflix's mission statement has changed. Their focus is on original content. And they’re no longer focused on serving their former customer base.” Many of us think of Netflix as it was years ago...
