HDR issues with specific discs and displays, or, "Why is this disc so dark?"

With rare exceptions like Unforgiven, I've always used the high lamp level for HDR with my previous-generations RS2000. That, plus I do have a 1.3 gain screen. It's a trade-off that slightly elevates the black levels as well, but it does give me HDR highlights that are a bit brighter, which pays...

Actually, by "when," I meant the date of the article, not of the screening.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About While we wait for A few words about...™ Invaders from Mars - in 4k UHD & Blu-ray

Any idea roughly when, or what newer films may have been covered in the same issue? Any idea when, even just the year, or maybe other newer films that may have been covered in the same issue? I'm a subscriber, but the archives aren't searchable. When you're trying to track something down, you...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Horse Soldiers – in Blu-ray

People gonna do what people gonna do, but judging grain from screenshots only is a dubious proposition. The "more pronounced grain" looks a bit unnatural in motion compared to the Kino. Again, proximity to the screen matters, but when looked at up close or on a larger screen, in motion, that...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Horse Soldiers – in Blu-ray

You may be, but since you are watching on a flat panel, if anything, the improvements will be less noticeable than they were in projection. But the differences are visible regardless. It's an improvement, but like I said, not a dramatic one. RAH is probably accurate in saying that the old one...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Horse Soldiers – in Blu-ray

I did, and it is a slight improvement over the MGM disc, though not a dramatic one. Mostly an improvement in terms of less digital tinkering. I'm perusing McBride's commentary track this morning.

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Quick and the Dead -- in 4k UHD Blu-ray

It's on multiple overseas BD and DVD releases -- French, German, British, and more. Supposedly, it's also the version on the French UHD, but whether it's really on the UHD or just on the included Blu-ray isn't clear. I'd assume the latter, since it would seem unlikely that Sony would produce two...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Horse Soldiers – in Blu-ray

I'll admit that I cheated -- it's a review copy. So hopefully yours does ship soon! I do have the older disc as well, so it will be interesting to compare the two.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - Giant -- in 4k UHD

I think that it's not so much a question of technology, as it is of tropes. Viewers these days are accustomed to seamless transitions that have been generated digitally. Viewers in 1955 were accustomed to the generational loss from optically printed transitions. It's not that they weren't...

That's exactly what he was saying. Thanks. I have no idea what movie he was thinking of, but he's pretty clear that he knows that his memories of it being Invaders from Mars were incorrect.

HDR issues with specific discs and displays, or, "Why is this disc so dark?"

Like I said, I only got somewhere when I switched my lamp to low -- and it still didn't look that good, just a little better. In the case of Unforgiven, there's no doubt that the issues are with the disc, not the display. I think that there's an argument to be made that the same thing is true of...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

I could certainly suggest to them linking to your website, but their wheels definitely grind slowly. It took them months to add a link for the full list of all movies that played there. To be fair, they knew that it had been compiled, but they had to do some legwork to track down the person who...

HDR issues with specific discs and displays, or, "Why is this disc so dark?"

Unforgiven was always dark as a bat's groin by design, with or without HDR, but it really causes issues with the HDR grade. That's one film that shouldn't even have had one. It's one of the few discs that I own that makes me wish that I had a 4K OLED to watch it on, instead of a projector.

There's also a list of all movies that played at the Cooper from 1962-1991, when it was shut down. It's on the St. Louis Park Historical Society website, or rather there's a link to it in the first sentence under "Cooper Theatre Milestones." Their site used to just mention that the list existed...

HDR issues with specific discs and displays, or, "Why is this disc so dark?"

I actually haven't watched The Meg since before JVC rolled out the first version of its frame-by-frame firmware. I remember that I did have to adjust the settings a bit, but that was still true of a lot of films when using the older firmware. I'm still doubtful that I'd prefer the new one set to...

HDR issues with specific discs and displays, or, "Why is this disc so dark?"

While it would be lovely if HDR was a set-and-forget, one-size fits all proposition, we all know that simply isn't the case. Thanks to variances in how different displays are manufactured, there's no consistency in how they implement HDR, and results can vary wildly. One frequent complaint is...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

That's true of Cinerama screens in general, regardless whether or not they're exhibiting three panel Cinerama films. I used to see films all the time on the old Cinerama screen at the Cooper Theatre in St. Louis Park, MN. In fact, that's why I picked up a nearly life-long habit. When my dad took...

    Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ Mamba – in Blu-ray

I watched it over the weekend, and I couldn't agree more about picking it up to support this kind of film preservation. Whatever faults that Mamba may have, it's still considered the oldest all-talking, full-color film, and worth buying for the historical value alone. It's an extraordinary...

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ Year of the Jellyfish – in Blu-ray

Just watched the disc this afternoon, and the subtitles are burned-in, with changeover marks visible at the end of every reel. Definitely a print -- or could it have been the internegative which preceded that? The damage looks like print damage, but I'll happily acknowledge my own lack of expertise.

Kino Lorber has a deal with Paramount, so anything is possible. On the other hand, it would be a Paramount master. So. . . We'd have to hope for the best on that score.

UHD Review A Few Words About A few words about...™ - True Romance -- in 4k UHD

I'll stand corrected, then. I'd forgotten that Warner stuck to Dolby Digital at that point, so when I read elsewhere that it was DTS as well, I didn't question that. But when I reviewed the U.K. version of Arrow's release last year, I thought that I had checked the end credits to verify if...
