Once upon a time, there were two ... geniuses

So did the copy shown on TCM very early Sunday morning. Looked better than the blu-ray, anyway.

Once upon a time, there were two ... geniuses

When I first saw Greatest Story as a kid, I thought the Calvary music was one of the most beautiful things I'd ever heard, but I thought Alfred Newman wrote it. I had no idea it was from Verdi's Requiem. I was under that mistaken impression for years.

Once upon a time, there were two ... geniuses

The cinematographer responsible for those beautiful images, William C. Mellor, died of a heart attack during production. He won an Oscar for The Diary of Anne Frank, Stevens' most recent film. He was replaced by Loyal Griggs, who had won an Oscar for Stevens' film Shane. Greatest Story was...

Once upon a time, there were two ... geniuses

George Stevens was attached to the Greatest Story project since 1958. I guess he didn't want to give up on it. Both movies are very good, but Stevens really worked hard to make his film as beautiful as it could possibly be.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

Now that Brothers Grimm is here, I need a new Holy Grail to hope for. I have two of them, though they're not as spectacular as the Brothers Grimm resurrection: 1. Ryan's Daughter on Blu-ray 2. 2001: A Space Odyssey in Smilebox

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

Got mine right on time yesterday and watched it last night. A beautiful restoration of a beautiful film. Many thanks to everyone who worked so hard on it.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

I saw 2001 at the Capitol - the last movie to play there before it was demolished - and in the 54 years since I have never had a more impressive movie screen experience.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

This was where I first saw it. It was hard to imagine it in Cinerama, seeing it in this condition. But that memory will be completely wiped out on March 29th.

Blu-ray Review A Few Words About A few words about…™ The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm – in Blu-ray

How the West Was Won did indeed start shooting first: May 28, 1961 as opposed to July 31, 1961 for Brothers Grimm. These are from the August 30, 1961 issue of Variety.

    RIP - Douglas Trumbull, 79

The Star Gate sequence from 2001 has still never been surpassed, and probably never will be.

My 2 cents worth on "Brothers Grimm"

I don't want to sound greedy - finally getting Brothers Grimm this way should be enough for any Cinerama fan - but wouldn't it be great if they Smileboxed 2001: A Space Odyssey? Also Grand Prix, Khartoum, The Greatest Story Ever Told ... all of them! Now I do sound greedy.

Press Release Warner Archive Collection Press Release: The Wonderful World of the Brothers Grimm (1962) (Blu-ray)

I can't be subjective about this movie. I saw it as a kid and loved it. The story, the performances, the cinematography, the production design, the music - all beautiful. Year after year, I would read about the water damage making it impossible to restore, and that not many people would want...

UHD Review A Few Words About While we wait for a few words about...™ West Side Story (2021) -- in 4k UHD

Thanks so much for posting this. I haven't seen it for many years. My family's copy of the vinyl album got lost over the years, and the CD didn't include this material. I was 6 when the movie came out and we got the album, and I can't tell you how many times I read these essays and looked at...

UHD Review A Few Words About While we wait for a few words about...™ West Side Story (2021) -- in 4k UHD

I agree completely, but it should be noted that Saul Bass did not design that poster. I just recently found out that it's by an artist named Joseph Caroff, who also designed the 007 logo with the gun sticking out of the 7. He is still alive at age 100! Saul Bass did design the fantastic...

UHD Review A Few Words About While we wait for a few words about...™ West Side Story (2021) -- in 4k UHD

Thanks to haineshisway and DarkVader for two of the best posts in this thread. Special thanks because you spoke up for Natalie Wood. She gave a beautiful performance that won't be forgotten. Rachel Zegler gave a beautiful performance as well. I enjoyed the new version very much, but it's...

My 2 cents worth on "Brothers Grimm"

As busy as he must have been, it seems typical of George Pal to make time to write to his fans. Thanks, Stephen, for posting this letter.

My 2 cents worth on "Brothers Grimm"

David Strohmaier is Person of the Year 2020. George Pal would be so thrilled.

Criterion Press Release: The Great Escape (1963) (Blu-ray) Available for Preorder

The Great Escape was the first movie I went to see all by myself. It was October 1963, and I was 8 years old. Times certainly have changed.

My 2 cents worth on "Brothers Grimm"

I'll always keep my hopes up for a Smilebox Blu-ray of Brothers Grimm. If I were Lucas or Spielberg, I'd even pay for the restoration. I'm so grateful I got to see it in Cinerama at the Dome in October 2012, another thing concerning this film that was supposed to be impossible and would never...

Pre-Order 2001: A Space Odyssey (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

My vote for the worst-ever mistake in a "2001" home video release was in the very first DVD. HAL's line "Affirmative, Dave. I read you." came out as "Affirmative, Dave", followed by silence.

Pre-Order 2001: A Space Odyssey (4k UHD) Available for Preorder

A few weeks ago, someone asked about the 2001 screening at the Franklin Institute, Philadelphia, in Omnimax. I saw it on Saturday 11/10. There were some flaws: the image could have been brighter, and the dome distorts the shape of the monolith in some shots pretty drastically. But that can...

WAC Releasing Auntie Mame onto Blu-ray 12-05-17!

One day some years ago, before "Auntie Mame" was on DVD, I got a pinched nerve in my neck which caused terrible pain. I was unable to eat or sleep. "Auntie Mame" happened to be on American Movie Classics that day - this is when they still showed uninterrupted, uncut classic movies. For 2 1/2...

What about a Blu of Ryans Daughter

Thanks, Ken. It really does look wonderful. It'll do fine until the Blu-ray comes along. The Overture and Exit Music were missing but the Intermission was included. I also bought Summertime and The Magnificent Ambersons in HD - a good way to compensate for the absence of Blu-rays for those...
