Apple Silicon (ARM based) Macs buyers and owners thread

I still use a 2012 MacBook Pro which I swapped out the mechanical HDD for a SSD years ago and it still works fine. Although the new MacBook Pros are super awesome, I’m starting to lean back into the same camp as John. At this point in my life and career, I think my next Mac purchase will be a...

My money is still on letting the iMac go to sleep instead of just powering off causing the issues. It takes, what, a few seconds to fully boot a new iMac with a SSD vs the old spinning platter so why even bother mucking about with sleep?

From my understanding, Macs have never been marketed as gaming machines. They are adequate and even excel and lead the pack at certain things but gaming has never been one of them.

Sleep has long been a MacOS and Windows issue. I haven’t let any machine of mine sleep for close to 20 years because weirdness tends to ensue when it wakes.

It’s almost 5PM and I’m eating dinner. You’re talking about eating lunch. Even though I know you’re on the west coast and I’m on central time, I’ve had a shit ton of beer and I can’t wrap my brain around the time difference right now. 😂

That just tells me it took 11 hours to go from the international to domestic hubs and leave for its next destination. This is not at all unusual. If they really want to have a gripe, I’ve had a package sitting in Olive Branch, MS since Friday morning with a “potentially delayed” status meaning...

Macworld is already reporting a work-around to move the menu bar below the notch: "To activate this, click on an app’s icon in the Finder and Get Info on it (Command+I on your keyboard, or go to File > Get Info). If it’s available, you’ll find an option in the General section to “Scale to fit...

I remember when my wife went from a MacBook Pro to a MacBook Air and Migration Assistant failed miserably. I think I was able to just set the MBA up as a new computer then restore from an iCloud backup. I think. It’s been a few years.

From what I am reading on CCC’s website, they can’t make fully bootable Big Sur backups that contain the system volume for Apple Silicon Macs either. They can only make them for Intel Macs. They can also make data-only backups of M1 Macs, same as SuperDuper. It sounds like they are still on...

Unfortunately, I’m not qualified to answer that question. Is it causing any noticeable system lag? If not, I personally wouldn’t tend to be too worried about it.

You may have stumbled upon a memory leak in Safari. Does it interrupt your workflow to quit and restart Safari? I’m guessing since you pointed it out that you didn’t experience that behavior with your Intel MBP?

Ive phased out MagSafe beginning in 2016. Apple bringing it back is a very wise and welcome decision. If we receive another round of $1400 stimulus payments in the spring, I might carve off a little bit to replace my 2012 MacBook Pro with either a new M series MacBook Air or (more than likely) a...

The return of MagSafe is what really made my ears prick up. It is beyond me why Apple let Jony Ive remove it in the first place.

Thanks for the info, Nelson. I have an Eero Pro mesh network deployed my my home (2 story, @2700 square feet) with one base station upstairs in the master bedroom where the internet enters the house and another downstairs in the foyer. I have solid WiFi throughout the house (400-500Mbps) with...

I still want to set up a Plex server with a Mac Mini and QNAP at some point so now I’m wondering how well an entry level M series Mini would work for that.
