Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I still have my original Sony X800 in my main home theater. It doesn't get used much, as I use my Panny 820 for pretty much all movie discs. The Sony currently has a Rockford Files BD loaded, but I haven't been watching that series for awhile.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I ended up going with the Panasonic 820 instead as a Dolby Vision upgrade to my original Sony X800. I couldn't get past Sony's decision for manually switching DV on/off, plus the reported lockups (my X800 occasionally does that). I bought it on sale for $450 from Value Electronics, with free...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I may end up with the Panny 820 eventually -- if I can get it on sale for less than the $500 it's going for new right now. I don't really need the HDR optimizer, as I have a 70-inch 4K LED display and not a front projector. Maybe if Best Buy has a 15% off sale when using their credit card.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Thanks for the information. That sucks. I don't know why Sony implemented DV this way. I can check this player off my list for now. Maybe if the price drops a lot during the holidays I will reconsider. With my UHD disc purchases slowing down (been buying 4K via streaming more due to the price)...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Please let us know how you like the player. I am especially curious about the Dolby Vision implementation -- whether you have to manually turn it on and off like with the Sony X700.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

If you are going to just use the HDMI connection for all audio and use your receiver's DACs for processing, I doubt you will notice any difference between the X-800M2 and the ES player. I do not think the video sections vary much, if at all, between the players. You will also get a longer...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I am not sure about the Pioneer, but the Panasonic offerings will not give you SACD or DVD-A support.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

As a follow-up to the freezing issue, there was a theory proposed on another forum that it may be a software bug related to background network activity during playback. The suggestion was to turn off most of the settings related to network activity. I did this a few months ago, and have not...

There is a new firmware update for the Sony X-800: https://esupport.sony.com/US/p/model-home.pl?mdl=UBPX800&template_id=1&region_id=1&tab=download#/downloadTab

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Mine has frozen exactly three times -- the last time was a few days ago when watching the UHD of Dunkirk. The first two times, the only way I could "unfreeze" the player was to pull the power plug. This last time, though, the open/close drawer button on my remote still worked, so I ejected the...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I had another player freeze last night when watching the first scene of the UHD disc of Baby Driver. Once again I had to unplug the power to reset the player, and afterwards the disc played all the way through with no issues. Quite a few people on another forum have been experiencing the same...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I experienced my first player freeze tonight about 75% of the way through the UHD disc of Alien: Covenant. The picture just froze, and the player would not respond to any commands via the remote, nor could I power it off from the front panel. I had to pull the power cord, and then the player...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

My first X800 died a few months ago, but Sony replaced it under warranty at absolutely zero cost to me, and the replacement has been fine. I thought it was an excellent player at the $270 I paid for it back in January, so at $150 I do not think you will find a better player. It does a great job...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

None of the built-in streaming apps on the Sony support HDR at this time as far as I am aware -- I can confirm that for Amazon and Vudu, but I am not a Netflix subscriber. I am using my Roku Ultra for Amazon 4K + HDR10, and the Smartcast app built into my Vizio M70-D3 4K display for Vudu's 4K +...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I agree with Matt's suggestion. HDMI cables can be finicky when it comes to 4K and HDR. I am using Monoprice certified high speed cables -- the "certified" is important when it comes to 4k + HDR. If it's not the cable, are you passing the signal through a receiver or is the X800 directly...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Lol. Nothing that interesting. My wife will occasionally watch discs of material I don't like in our bedroom. The setup is pretty basic -- a 37 inch display, Comcast cable box, Roku and Sony BD player. No external speakers -- audio from the 720p Vizio built-in speakers.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

According to this article, Sony has confirmed that the X-800 will not be getting a firmware update for Dolby Vision. It's not that big of a deal for me. I will probably eventually upgrade the player once more affordable options are available and move the X-800 to our bedroom to replace the BD...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Similar to Edwin, I am running my Sony UHD player through my Denon X3300 with no issues. The Denon will not pass Dolby Vision until it receives a promised firmware update, but that does not matter with this Sony model anyway, since the player doesn't support DV. 4K video and HDR-10 work fine...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

My replacement X800 is scheduled to arrive at my home tomorrow. I shipped it to Sony on 7/27, and it arrived at their location in Texas on 8/1. That was pretty fast turnaround time -- quicker than they promised. I'm looking forward to getting the player back in my system.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

That offer is available to anyone. The selection of films to pick from wasn't that great when I purchased my player from Best Buy at the end of February. I ended up selecting The Shallows and Underworld as my two freebies. I understand that Sony has added more titles to select from since then.

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

It's not that big of a deal to me, Matt -- it's more of an inconvenience. Sony is covering the shipping costs both ways and is sending me a brand new player. I couldn't ask for more from them. I only have two unwatched UHD titles (I only own 22 titles in total), and have plenty of BD's that I...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

My X800 has stopped recognizing UHD discs. After about a minute attempting to read a UHD disc, the player displays an error message stating it cannot read the inserted disc. I have tried several UHD discs, and get the same error each time. The Sony will still play BD and DVDs, though. The device...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I hope Sony gets it straightened out for you, Todd. It's frustrating having a device that doesn't perform properly. If the replacement player does not solve the issue, it has to be some sort of a HDMI handshake issue. I finally enabled the Amazon Prime app on my Sony last night and watched...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

No lockups here. Once or twice, the player would not recognize I had a disc inserted, but taking the disc out and re-inserting fixed the issue. Todd, are your lockups happening when playing a disc or using one of the streaming apps? I have been using the player almost exclusively for playing...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I have not tried Amazon on the Sony yet. I may give it a spin, as I am not currently watching anything in 4K HDR on there anyway. Amazon's been very reliable for me on the Roku Ultra, though. I have read that others are experiencing issues with the Amazon app on the new Roku 4K players, so I...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

The Sony doesn't do HDR with Amazon right now, which my Roku Ultra does. The audio chirps with Vudu are annoying, though. I didn't experience any chirps or video pauses using the casting app on my Vizio display with Vudu, but it's more cumbersome using that method, as I need to use an Android...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I finally tried a streaming app on the X800 the other night. I have been experiencing a "chirping" audio issue with Vudu on my Roku Ultra which others have also been reporting. We had a free rental with Vudu that I had to use before it expired on Friday, so I tried the Vudu app on the player. It...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

There is a new firmware update available for the Sony X-800. It is supposed to address an issue with macro blocking when playing 20th Century Fox BDs, along with other issues. I have been avoiding playing Fox BDs on this player due to the reported issue, using my Panny BD player instead. I just...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

The Sony is very competitively priced at $300 for a UHD player. That's the same price as the new LG UHD player and last year's Samsung UHD player, much less than last year's Panasonic UHD player, and a little over half the price of the Oppo. It also plays SACD and DVD-Audio discs, which the...

Sony Introduces Exciting new 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I did not even know the Sony had a region-free mod available (not that I'm interested in adding it to my player anyway). The Sony works very well for it's price, as long as you just need a standard UHD/BD/DVD player. It handles SACD and DVD-Audio, too, which is a plus for me, as I do have some...
