Oppo Releases UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I read on another forum that several people have found the new upgrade problematic. One person's Oppo was bricked and he's going to have to return it to the manufacturer. I guess they'll still service them even though they aren't making them any more.

Oppo Releases UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

You're seeing the downconverted 2160p image in 1080p and stripped of its HDR metadata now showing in Rec. 709 (Standard Dynamic Range). On some panels the image comes out darker without its HDR while other players and panels work together well to produce a beautiful image. Quite a few people do...

Oppo Releases UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I don't have a 203/205, but in considering buying one, I've been reading owner comments at another forum for several weeks. They seem to suggest that there is a setting on the Oppo you can set that will force HDR10 from the disc rather than DV if you'd rather view the disc in that mode.

Oppo Releases UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

Yes, but many UHD players can do that, too, and still retain the Atmos sound. However, I've read that UHD transfers that are encoded with HDR (which is almost all of them), don't look very good down rezzed, rather dark and a bit murky. But I'm no expert with that. I'm sure a few other people do...

Oppo Releases UDP-203 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player

I don't blame you for being furious. I'd be bitterly disappointed, too.
