    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Here's something really radical - some thoughts on Kino Lorber Blu-rays. What a concept to have the title of a thread actually have something that's relevant to the title of the thread :) Here we go: Horizon's West - somehow I'd never gotten around to seeing this, even though I love Boetticher...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

And there you have cut to the chase. If one is given a master with bad color, why not spend the money (a LOT less than having them do a new scan), go into a room with a colorist, and fix it. Fitzwilly could have been at least helped in that regard and probably made to resemble what it originally...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Apparently you have a short memory. Not in this thread, in the other thread and certainly more than once. Very few actually post opinions in this thread, just what they want Kino to do.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Has nothing to do with pristine, whatever that means. It has to do with putting out something that isn't right. The fact that this stuff doesn't bother some people is astonishing to me. The goal should always be for the film to resemble - the film and what it looked like, color-wise. Then again...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Great for you. Apparently you don't mind color that's completely off. I do. Others do. And this type of attitude insures that nothing will improve or change, so...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

One can't really criticize them without being taken to task. But the sheer number of titles they release means they pretty much accept what they're given, unless they feel a title will sell more if they have the studio do a new transfer. But, for ME, releasing something substandard is never a...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

If you just want to see it, fine. If you want something of quality, it's not fine, it's nauseating. Clearly an ancient transfer from a faded internegative.

I can also comment on Fitzwilly, which I'm quite sorry I wasted money on. The transfer is a brown mess and Kino should have rejected it instantly. Infuriating.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Well, I can comment on Thoroughly Modern Millie. It's a nice transfer, certainly - sharp, excellent detail, and the clean-up of the opticals is pretty stellar. There is zero excuse for the mono overture, entr'acte and exit music. ZERO. Clearly, Kino don't want to make waves with Universal and...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

You're understanding everything quite well. "Couldn't be bothered" would do it. Not wanting to ruffle feathers would do it. Knowing the DVD and all releases had it in stereo would do it. Merely asking Universal to investigate and check would have been the first thing to do.

    Funny how that works, huh?

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Yes, I watched all three. Great Imposter is the best of the lot, the 40 Pounds of Trouble, then Perfect Furlough. I love The Great Imposter and have since I saw it the day it opened.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Oh, dear Robert, I think you know exactly what I mean, because there are many threads here where one can go and read opinions about transfers PRIOR to purchasing. That is what I'm talking about. Perhaps I'll start another thread, because this one's no different than what used to be posted in the...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

So, the idea of actually talking about releases, quality-wise, apparently has gone the way of the dodo bird and now we have a thread that should be renamed Kino Speculations. I'd prefer the other kind of thread. Maybe we can have two, because this kind of thing is of no interest to me.

Perhaps Scott can also do a shot by shot and tell everyone exactly what's missing and when, what's before and what's after and if there's this jump cut.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

I know, right? They finally make this a sticky thread specifically about Kino releases and what people think of them and the second they do that everyone shows up and starts talking about other stuff. This isn't brain surgery folks :)

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Folks, words have meanings and the dumbing down is ridiculous. These are not "restorations." Period. They are new transfers. Period. People who actually do restorations, like Mr. Harris, have every right to be annoyed at this wholesale co-opting and false use of the word.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

It's so simple - NEW 2K (4K or whatever) transfer from (insert element used) The End. How hard is it to be truthful?
  19. haineshisway

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

    Yes, is Kino aware?

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Is it? I remember the post from them castigating the reviewer over him saying it was the same as the old transfer. That post has now conveniently disappeared. But to be really clear, if you have the overseas Blu-ray you have this already.
  22. haineshisway

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

I really wish they'd stop with the 2K restorations! Just because something is transferred in 2K doesn't mean it's a restoration, for God's sake. It's so irritating. And anything can be transferred in 2K - a print, 16mm, 8mm - it's so meaningless without the information about the source used -...

So, what's the problem with the audio on season two Outer Limits' first episode? Someone makes one post about it and no one asks a follow-up question?

That it took you posting about it here to GET that e-mail is the problem.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

It is very reasonable to expect a response from a company that screwed up with preorders. It is very reasonable to expect an apology and a proper update. It is not very reasonable for any company to go on radio silence about their screw-ups when it involves customers whose money they've taken...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

Again, while Mr. White is very talented, he is not a film restoration person. That word is simply bandied about with total disregard for what it actually means. Mr. Harris is a film restoration person - that is NOT what Mr. White does because the films he's working on simply do not need what...

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

So, that I understand. It has to be scanned somewhere and Deluxe is a lab they use often. In other words, they didn't just hand someone the negative or ship it somewhere - they don't do that. That was my first point. My second point and/or question was/is was Arrow actually in the room for...
  29. haineshisway

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

So you're saying that Arrow flew to the US and sat in on the scanning? Because MGM/UA would never let the negative out, especially to go overseas.

    Your thoughts on Kino-Lorber Blu-rays

I'm curious about the "fully restored by Kino" comment - is MGM/UA in the habit of actually giving their film elements to others? I've always been told the answer to that is no. So, did they do the transfers in house and then Kino worked with those elsewhere? Genuinely curious.
