That’s correct. That will allow the AppleTV to display HDR and Dolby Vision when it is part of the content being viewed, but will not force it to convert non-HDR material into HDR (which can look ghastly at times). It’ll also allow different frame rates if your TV supports it - for instance...

They can’t. DV requires specific information about the display being used that a projector just can’t provide.

I was thinking the same thing so you’re not alone in that.

I purchased my 4K AppleTV box in advance of having any 4K equipment. My receiver is still limited to HD only, so even though the box is 4K capable, the receiver dumbs it down to HD so we end up seeing HD content on the 4K flat panel. My projector, my main viewing device, is HD only.

Depends on who the provider of the content is. Apple separates the audio and video for its iTunes content, allowing you to access the best possible in each for your system. If you have access to a 4K version of a title with Atmos through iTunes, but are viewing on an HD display, you’ll get HD...

I think it was only one hardware redemption per account, not year. I just got a new iDevice and a second free year was not offered to me when I set it up.

You’ve said this before but that simply hasn’t been my experience on the device - my UK programs that were shot at 25fps played back at that frame rate prior to the new software update.

With very rare exceptions in my experience, Apple doesn’t encode black bars into their files for movies or shows from iTunes. A million years ago when I worked for a home video label that provided content to digital services, the deliverable requirement from Apple was for a file that didn’t have...

I don’t think it is an essential upgrade for anyone who already owns the previous 4K box.

Which device are you using? If you are on one of the older, HD-only AppleTV units, the 4K box that came out several years ago is an evolutionary leap in video playback at all resolutions and frame rates. Prime also has a hodgepodge of new and old masters, which could be contributing, but I...

I get that. At the same time, tiny company had a market for an app in the first place because Apple’s interface didn’t come prepared to do some very common, industry standard playback things. I wish the tiny company well. I like their app and will still use it. But on the whole, it’s also good...

So wouldn’t that be a good thing? I don’t understand why we need to make up new definitions of words to obscure the meaning of what’s being said but anytime Apple wants to make a product better, that strikes me as being a good solution. The official Plex app for AppleTV is now leaps and bounds...

What does that mean? Removed from the App Store? I run my HTPC/Plex with the AppleTV because that’s the box I had when I started putting it together. People who do HTPC more hardcore seem to prefer the Nvidia Shield as their playback device. I’m not married to AppleTV for Plex - if Apple makes...

I’ve never had any frame rate issues with HTPC playback using the Infuse app - my projector shows everything coming through at the proper rate, whether that be 23.976 or 24. That particular app is invaluable at working around the software limitations that Apple builds in to play material in its...

It’s hard to say anything with Apple - I love a lot of what they do but they’re very quick to abandon things that aren’t being used by a large percentage of their base, and they’re very slow to adopt things that mess with their “form over function” design ethos. They’re like a niche brand that...

I haven’t yet used it for this but one day I will - when normal comes back we might host a couple outdoor barbecue and movie screenings. The projector is easy enough to move outside, the AppleTV is easy enough to move outside, but I’m not taking apart my whole speaker setup and dragging it out...

I definitely use headphones for that purpose. The current AppleTV 4K allows the use of Bluetooth headphones, although in practice I most often just plug wired headphones into my receiver. Are they saying the new version takes away that Bluetooth capability?

I’m 99.9% sure that the handshake issues in my case have to do with an older receiver with the HDMI board on its way out. I do not find it inconvenient to turn the receiver off and back on (a five second process) once or twice a month to fix it. At this point, that is the better solution for me...

    Apple TV 4K official

My ATK4K will occasionally - maybe once every other week at most - lose the audio portion of the handshake when starting playback, it’ll do that handshake quick flash when it changes resolution/format and the picture will show up but will be silent. Fortunately, the fix is easy - if I just turn...

To be clear I personally don’t have any issue with any Apple created software on the AppleTV. I’m not sure if others do.

I can’t imagine what you could add to the AppleTV from the perspective of users who just want high quality playback of prerecorded content. Maybe more HTPC support like you said but that’s a niche of a niche, and the third party Infuse app fixes everything wrong with the native Plex app - and...

The AppleTV 4K unit doesn’t downconvert streams; it plays the version most appropriate to the system being used. I use one attached to a 1080 projector and I’m thrilled with the results. Media from the iTunes Store is typically encoded with higher bitrates than other storefronts and to my eyes...

I know that my 4K box does that match frame rate beautifully - it gets used for a lot of Great British Bake-off! What was cool for me on getting the frame rates right was showing that off to my wife and our friends, who had gotten used to UK programming having that PAL to NTSC conversion built...

The 4K box (which I have, but is used for HD) does all of that great. And the Infuse app does MPEG2 just fine. That’s what’s frustrating about iOS but mostly solved by Infuse. The actual hardware in the box is capable of so much more than what the iOS restricts it to, and Infuse works around...

    Apple TV 4K official

Infuse is an interface to use to access a Plex server instead of using the AppleTV Plex app, and it does everything right that the native Plex app for AppleTV does wrong. The AppleTV is capable of far more than its iOS supports, and Plex for APTV works within the limitations of iOS. The two...

I like the aTV remote because it’s the only remote that actually came with any of my devices that doesn’t require a line of sight to work. For everything else I have, a third party device is required to achieve that result.
