    NFL Off-season 2019

That would be a great idea -- even better would be if the league also eliminated two more preseason games, but that will never happen wihthout an 18 game regular season schedule because of the money. Although I would bet if the league surveyed the season ticket holders, those people would...

    NFL Off-season 2019

I don't think that it they way it would be handled. First, that would require each team to carry their preseason roster sizes through the first few weeks, which the NFL would frown upon. Second, there would be a huge negative fan reaction to the first few weeks -- season ticket holders already...

    NFL Off-season 2019

I saw that here. It sounds like wild speculation at this point. I know one thing if this happens -- it will be the final nail in the coffin of me participating in the long time fantasy football league I'm in with some friends. Our league's 20th anniversary is this year, and I have been...

If Le'Veon Bell isn't the dumbest athlete of all time, he certainly is in the top 5. Listen to his 911 call after two girls he left in his house (naked) stole $1M in cash and jewelry from him. That was one expensive threesome!

The label gets applied too easily at times, but it fits here. Bart Starr was a true legend. RIP.

    NFL Off-season 2019

I don't think retaining salary as part of a trade is an option in the NFL, but I am not 100% certain. Anyway, I agree that it's unlikely any other team is taking on that contract. The funny thing, though, is that Pittsburgh offered him a better deal originally and Bell opted to sit out a year...

    NFL Off-season 2019

The Jets story continues to unfold. John Clayton reported that the Jets are interested in trading LeVeon Bell before the start of the season. Of course, finding another team willing to pay Bell $20 million over the next two years will not be easy. The Jets were the only team that seriously...

    NFL Off-season 2019

Yes, even the Rooney Family, with all their success since the NFL - AFL merger, struggled for decades running the franchise until they finally figured out how to hire competent people to make the football decisions -- starting with Chuck Noll. Brown, Halas, and Davis actually made the football...

    NFL Off-season 2019

In the case of the Lions, it may be centuries. They are well over a half century into the Ford Family ownership debacle, and there is no end in sight.

    NFL Off-season 2019

The Jets fired GM Mike Maccagnan and VP for player personnel Brian Heimerdinger yesterday. Supposedly new head coach Adam Gase and Maccagnan were not seeing eye to eye, and one of the biggest issues was that Gase did not want the team to sign free agent Le'Veon Bell, as Gase did not want to tie...

    NFL Off-season 2019

Not officially, but I just cannot see him ever playing again. The Steelers did keep him under contract, but mostly as a means to provide him with health care insurance and accrue years for his pension. It was a classy move by the organization. He definitely will not play this upcoming season...

    NFL Off-season 2019

Per Peter King, the Steelers outbid the Giants and Falcons for the #10 overall pick that Denver owned and Pittsburgh used to draft Devin Bush. Supposedly Denver really wanted one of the Iowa tight ends, but didn't want to use that high of a pick on Fant. If they couldn't have worked out a deal...

    NFL Off-season 2019

I was part of that decline in viewership. I think this is the first year where I didn't watch any coverage at all -- not even a quick channel flip to see the crawl of picks at the bottom of the screen. My wife actually watched more coverage than me -- she came downstairs complaining that she had...

    NFL Off-season 2019

Well, the Cardinals were able to get rid of Rosen, obtaining a 2nd round pick this year and a future later round pick from Miami. Considering that Arizona gave up assets to move up and draft Rosen last season, the Cardinals really come out on the losing end of this deal.

    NFL Off-season 2019

Maybe so, but even the Pats did not use a first round pick on Gronk, let alone a top 10 pick. The Chiefs used a 3rd round pick on Kelce, the Eagles used a 2nd round pick on Zack Ertz, and Jimmy Graham was a 3rd rounder. The top tight ends this league has seen over the past couple of decades...

    NFL Off-season 2019

This is the first year I watched absolutely zero draft day coverage for the first round -- in past years I would at least flip the channel a couple of times to see the crawl of picks at the bottom on the screen. This year, though, I kept the TV tuned to the NHL playoff games once I got home from...

    NFL Off-season 2019

As someone who's lived in the metro Detroit area his entire life, I can also attest to this. I have personally witnessed it firsthand for over a half century -- and the Ford family has been screwing up the franchise for over 60 years. The Detroit Lions: Rebuilding since 1957!

    NFL Off-season 2019

I watched none of the first round coverage, and only checked the draft list through the first half of the round, but my impressions of a few things: Pittsburgh did a very unSteeler-like thing and moved up significantly to take Devin Bush. I really like this move, as Bush is exactly the type of...

    NFL Off-season 2019

The two SB MVPs do help. His stats, though, do not measure up as anything special compared with his contemporaries. Heck, Matt Stafford's stats blow Eli away, and there is no way he's a Hall of Famer. I think he will eventually get in, and his last name will definitely help.

    NFL Off-season 2019

Definitely not first ballot, and a marginal Hall of Famer at best. Jim Plunkett won two Super Bowls and didn't get in, so there is a precedent. I honestly think Eli's just an average QB who was in the right place at the right time in two playoff runs. If his last name wasn't Manning his chances...

    NFL Off-season 2019

I stopped watching the draft coverage when the league stretched it to three days. There is way too much “talking head” time compare to the old Saturday / Sunday draft — I find the current format unwatchable. I just check online the next morning to see the selections for each round.

    NFL Off-season 2019

I don’t think there was any way that Seattle was letting Wilson get away. The Giants rumors were probably planted by Wilson’s agent as negotiating leverage.

    NFL Off-season 2019

That happens now if the DB back is beaten on a pattern and grabs the receiver before the ball is in the air — and it’s only a 5 yard penalty. As Malcolm said, it hasn’t been a problem in the college game.

    NFL Off-season 2019

The Hail Mary is a variation of the scenario I outlined above of the 50 yard penalty being awarded on a marginal PI. I have thought for a long time that the NFL's penalty for defensive pass interference is too severe. The NCAA has it right -- it's a 15 yard penalty and automatic first down (or a...

    NFL Off-season 2019

Opening up replay to pass interference -- both calls and non-calls -- is an overreaction to one very bad missed call from last season. I think it potentially opens up more problems than it fixes. This could mean just about every play in the final two minutes of each half could come under review...

    NFL Off-season 2019

This is one more step towards the NFL completely removing the kickoff from the game. The current rules have made the play mostly a non-event anyway, which is a shame. It used to be an exciting part of the game. Now it's just that boring touchback wedged between a couple of long commercial breaks.

Gotta get some value for having all those high-priced attorneys on retainer.
  28. Scott Merryfield

    NFL Off-season 2019

The NFL has been this way for quite a few years. Teams are so desperate for a QB that they are willing to waste first round picks on the likes of Christian Ponder, Johnny Manziel, Tim Tebow, EJ Manuel, Paxton Lynch, Jake Locker, Brandon Weeden, etc.

    NFL Off-season 2019

Fitzpatrick is the perfect starter for a team planning on tanking for a high draft pick in the 2020 draft. There will be better QB prospects to choose from in next season's draft, especially considering that Miami would have to trade up to get a crack at Murray or Haskins -- probably the only...

    NFL Off-season 2019

I have never watched it, either. We don't subscribe to HBO (although I may get it for a month after the final season of Game of Thrones has completed), and I'm not a fan of reality TV, anyway.
