    Help an old person

I usually prefer to buy my equipement locally, but wouldn't have any problem buying from Harmanaudio's ebay store. I agree with you Doug that some of their Buy it Now prices are a bit steep, but if you bid great deals can be had. But like you, Doug, I alway get a little nervous with...

Do speakers really "break in" or does your ear just finally relent?

Doug, Great setup, love the pics. Billy, I can't say that you'll like your speakers better after a break-in period, but I'm a firm believer that many speakers sound differently after breaking in. IMO, this is esp true of metal drivers, such as you have. I have read a few professional...

Please, owners of Yamaha RXV 530, help me...

Helder, I have a V1 and my daughter has a 5540, neither have your problem. My suggestion is to call tech support. Good Luck, Phil

    US$300 (street) subs. Any opinion?

TOM seemed to think that 80 db at 20 Hz was very respectable for a $500 dollar sub. I have read the report and TOM's S&V shootout. Neither of them measure the IL120. The best actually was the Intermezzo 1.2, IMO, which hit 80 db at 16 Hz. To be honest, there are other things to consider in a sub...

    US$300 (street) subs. Any opinion?

The P2 and the IL120s are both good choices. It was SGHT that called the IL120s the sub to beat under $1000. S & V did a shoot out which included the IL100s. The IL100s did 80 db at 20 Hz. I would expect the IL120s to do better considering it has a 500 watt and 12" driver vs the IL100s 250 watt...

    No center channel, thoughts?

Hey Albert, I haven't heard any of the speakers you mentioned and not to push anything, but the Il36 was stated in SGHT as one of the best center channels at any price and has always gotten great reviews. The IL60 set, including the IL36 and IL10 are borderline AA rated in SGHT last years...

    Yamaha going very low end?

Other than start a THX war that has been discussed on many occations. I suggest that you go over to the speaker forum and read the thread "the value of the THX rating". You should be able to find it over the last couple of days. I would also ingnor any magazine's opinion concidering the amount...

    Yamaha going very low end?

Steve, No offense, but I doubt that the THX logo had anything to do with it, considering the receivers and other equipment that have that logo. More likely is the cost of your Onkyo, for which you could have bought three 5250s. Just food for thought. Phil

    No center channel, thoughts?

Albert, I see your problem and one I'll have when I move and get my big screen out of storage. It does sound as if your new equipement has magnified what you feel are short commings in your center channel. I wonder if it might be a good idea to try a different speaker. I noticed that you have...

    No center channel, thoughts?

I have mine located below the TV. Actually it's in the top shelf of my rack, which is open on all sides. Luckily there's only about 2" difference between the height of my main tweeters and the tweeter of the center. In this position the center point right at the top of the sofa, without having...

    Yamaha going very low end?

Matt, I know this is true for the Rx-v3300 on down but for the Z1 it was my understanding that the RS232 was also for future upgrades. Mike, If I'm not mistaken there is an upgrade for the 5800 to the 5803 or a resonable facsimile. Phil

    No center channel, thoughts?

Albert :) Chris, The center channel in movies does more than anchor, although this is its main purpose. But it also plays sounds that still come from the mains. For example music and the aspect it plays is different giving you a more spacial arrangement. Same thing with other sounds such...

    No center channel, thoughts?

IMO, what Phil has expressed here is the difficulty in finding a center speaker that matches your mains. Which, IMO, is why many people prefer to use an identical speaker. It certainly makes it easier and it may be difficult for some to find a center to match what they already have. It is also...
