Really sounds like you have it connected to a multi-room output which is why source/volume don't matter.

Tony as Kwang says, just set 4:3 display to 4:3 in the setup menu. The only possible problem (a bug at least on the one I have) is the positioning of 4:3 DVD menu prompts/cursors are still displayed as if the content were stretched out in full. Not a major problem by any means, but still a bug...

My Toshiba 4700 DVD player plays CD perfectly, and isn't expensive. I find it highly unlikely I'll 'wear out' the DVD player by playing CDs anymore than playing DVDs. Next people will be worried about trading off alleged (but unnecessary) 'burn-in' requirements vs. burn-out possibility!

Well I just tried Superbit Fifth Element on my 4700 and I could switch between interlaced and progressive with the remote. I'd just try your experiment again... it should work.

Hmmm... remote switch only works if physical switch on back is set to [p]rogressive. But if remote switch worked on one movie but not another without switching the physical switch that's strange. Maybe the battery is iffy in the remote?

Agreed Dave - I was ready to get new speakers before I heard how they could sound after MCACC! So the receiver SAVED me money... hehe - well I can tell the wife that! :D

Jonathan - you don't need a SPL meter because the MCACC auto-calibration feature of the receiver will do everything automatically, setting reference level accurately for EACH SPEAKER, along with EQ and delay. It's an awesome feature.

I love my 4700 for the price. The zoom and 4:3 pillaring are great, and the chroma bug isn't as noticable as my older 2109.

I am just more and more impressed with my 49TX as time goes on. It's hard to believe my ancient speakers now sound SO good. Put in a surround concert DVD like Sting's All This Time, or Eagles' Hell Freezes Over and it'll blow you away. Many 'critics' who say it doesn't have this or that...
