The problem with this set is the EXCESSIVE DVNR. Items in the scene that should move in unison are detached. Don't know how else to explain it. Horrible.

I thought Smith said right at the beginning of the Canadian one that that show was the second one. The first one wasn't filmed or had a problem so they did it again. I agree, skip disc 1 and go right to disc 2.
The best version of this, and a few others of his films, are the French Integral boxset from Film Sans Frontieres. I think Gary has screenshots on dvdbeaver.com. Not easy to get but worth the effort. I highly doubt Kino's release will be better, if even close.
I think any that work in 'keyboard' mode, or whatever it's called, will work. Basically it decodes the barcode and sends it as text just like you entered it via the keyboard. A 'light pen' would be the cheapest route.
