Somehow my receiver seems to amplify less and less the longer it's plugged in

Ok, cool. I suppose I'll just leave it as is for now, it's not worth the effort to replace it. I don't really want to buy a new receiver for just the computer at this point. I'll wait until I get a new one for the theater and then the computer will get the Yamaha RXV-1300. :-) Thanks.

Somehow my receiver seems to amplify less and less the longer it's plugged in

The receiver in question is an old Kenwood 1080VR that I'm using to amplify a stereo signal from a computer. When I first set it up the volume will be reasonably loud at "-40 dB" and loud at "-30 dB". But after months of time (6 months or so) I'm finding that I have to turn the volume up louder...

Do I really need Expensive Speakers for Home Theater?

Vin, First I admit I didn't read the entire thread, I skimmed. My advice to you is to buy something half decent. I slowly built my home theater piece by piece by buying one quality part at a time. You don't have to go crazy, but make sure it's something half decent or you'll end up...

Looking for speakers for a computer for $500 or so, including bookshelf speakers.

Ok, I've settled on a pair of Axiom M3's running through my receiver. I asked a lot of questions and Alan Lofft of Axiom was really helpful in answering them all. One of the things he told me was that the S/N ratio of my receiver wouldn't be an issue (inaudible) and that the receiver could run...

Looking for info on Abstract Acoustics Speakers

I have an old Abstract Acoustics subwoofer. Abstract Acoustics was made by a Toronto company called Audiosphere in the 1980s and is now out of business. They were generally lousy speakers (sorry to say).

Looking for speakers for a computer for $500 or so, including bookshelf speakers.

Hey, that Audioengine 5 system is interesting. I'm not sure what league of sound quality it will be in though. I read on their website that they tuned the speakers specifically to sound good when playing compressed MP3s and such. Since compressed MP3s sound like crap, I can only imagine what...

Looking for speakers for a computer for $500 or so, including bookshelf speakers.

I've currently got a high end soundcard (Auzen X-FI Prelude) going into an old Kenwood 1080VR receiver. The receiver is used to amplify and drive a set of Paradigm Atom speakers with a seperate powered 8" home theater sub. I'm running the speakers through the sub instead of running the speakers...

    Headphones, $100-$200 - Suggestions?

I don't have any experience with iTunes, but if it's lossless then it should be the same regardless of what format you use. :-) Do a comparisson test between an MP3 and lossless copy of the same song and see if you can tell a difference.

    Headphones, $100-$200 - Suggestions?

Remember: garbage in, garbage out. That cracking and buzzing you hear might not be the headphones - it's the electronics you've got them plugged into! I find when I plug my headphones directly to my computer sound card it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as when I run the audio into a...

    Headphones, $100-$200 - Suggestions?

I second Gabriel's recommendation of the Audio Technica ATH-A900s. A few years back a friend and I each bought a pair and were extremely impressed with the sound quality. It changed our standards about good sound - after hearing them suddenly all the other speakers in the house sounded like...

    My DIY Theater Screen

Well the cedar certainly made the screen nice and light, the entire thing weighs only 20 lbs. It just doesn't hold screws very tightly so you have to be careful. :-)

    My DIY Theater Screen

My room is long and skinny with half used for the theater. It's 26 feet long and about 11 feet wide. The projector is mounted roughly in the middle of the room about 10 feet from the screen, and the sitting position is directly under the projector (also about 10 feet from the screen). Don't...

    My DIY Theater Screen

It's called "Blackout Cloth" and is used to line curtains. You can read a bit more about is being used for screens here: http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=646534 And yes, I need to black out around the screen. But instead of painting I'll be putting velvet curtains and such...

    My DIY Theater Screen

Well the screen size is actually a bit of a decoy, because the projector isn't powerful enough to fill it. :-) Yes, I can stretch the image to fill the screen but then I end up with noticable screen door effect and washed out colors from my normal seating position. When building the screen I...

    My DIY Theater Screen

Yes, hard wood is recommended. I didn't realize the cedar would be soft like that, I was just hypnotized by how nice and straight those boards were when I was buying them at the lumber store. :-) Pine would probably work well.
