It's a 20" Sony CRT TV :D - I use it for everyday TV use. I now use a chair that it sits on, but in that photo I used to move it up on the entertainment rack everytime I wanted to watch TV, or move it down on the floor everytime I wanted to use the projector.
I'd consider the Energy C series or RC series for that price range. Energy has some amazing sounding speakers for the money. I own a pair of Energy C-3's. Excellent bookshelves for $350/pair.
Does anyone here own a Cambridge Audio 540R or 640R? What do you think of it? I'm also considering an used Arcam AVR-200 or AVR-250, or an Outlaw Audio 1070. My budget is limited to $1200, but I'm not ruling out buying used gear to keep the cost down to $600-800. I really need to upgrade...
I think it's pretty normal to be hearing vibrations from your household furniture that wasn't meant to be in a theater environment with movie bass sound effects :D
If you are using it for a college dorm room I wouldn't go with anything more than an 8" sub since your dorm room is most likely small. You don't want to bother the neighbors. The HSU STF-1 is a decent sub, it has an 8" driver, and it's only $250.
I wouldn't even have any DSP mode on - I'm a purist when it comes to audio. I prefer to hear the actual original native source how it was intended to be heard.
I would not recommend buying a DVD/VCR combo. If one of them breaks, you have to replace the whole entire thing. You're also limited to a small amount of available DVD/VCR combo options.
