Just got back from first viewing - wow. Liked it a lot. Can safely say that's the best Star Wars movie in decades. Wonderful moment at the end - my kids hadn't realized this took place just before Star Wars (they thought maybe it was another Rey movie).

Haven't seen the theatrical version. Just finished the extended and I certainly enjoyed it. The 'CGI monster of the week' was not half as bad as I feared. Satisfied; solid movie! Am left pondering who out in space will have heard Lex's bells...

I found it odd that when Thorin rises and charges on Azog (late in the movie) they play the Elves' theme music. Did anyone else notice that? I loved the dwarf theme in the movie. Maybe they thought it had been played enough already.

I was surprised - some parts I thought would be cheesy were not (Galadriel - actually I enjoyed the council immensely), and even the non-Tolkien parts worked for me. Except for Azog, I don't know why they thought they needed to bring him in. He reminded me of the Uruk-hai chase in FOTR. Really...
