After years of bugging my father for a movie projector, I finally got one as a birthday present when I was 9 years old. I've been a film collector ever since. As the years went on I added VHS, Laserdisc, DVD's and eventually Blu-rays to my collection, though I never fully turned away from 16mm film prints. They're still beautiful to behold when projected properly on a large screen.

My love of film led me to The Library of Congress, where I began my professional archival career at the Library's nitrate film storage and restoration facility in Dayton, OH in 1985. It was there that the original nitrate negatives, masters and prints for many of the studios were kept.

I left the Library in 1991 and moved to Los Angeles. After a stint at Turner Entertainment and a couple of stock footage libraries, I went to work for PRO-TEK Vaults, a state of the art archival film and digital storage and repair facility. PRO-TEK maintains many of the film industry's critical film and video elements and is considered to be the best in the business. I was there when the company opened its doors in 1994. Today I am Director of Operations.

While I still love film, I can't help but be impressed by the quality of today's digital projectors, both in the theatres and at home. I have a 10' screen in my home theatre and some of the Blu-rays are hands down superior to the available film prints.

Digital is great for restoration and presentation, but it absolutely stinks when it comes to preservation. Standards change constantly, formats come and go in a flash, hard drives crash and digital tapes are some of the most fragile media I've ever worked with in my life. I have a favorite saying, one I didn't create, but it's oh so true - "The warranty of shooting and preserving on digital formats: will last forever, or five years, whichever occurs first."

Regardless, I still love my Blu-rays!

Collecting Blu-rays, DVD's and 16mm prints. Also love old architecture.
