"There are two sides to this story just like most and those that are very set in their ways about each. " Yes, there's the scientific side and the audiophile side. If speakers had to break-in, it would be measureable. Those measurements would be repeatable. Anyone care to post some repeatable...
I didn't use my Dayton sub for music before the BFD. Now, it's useable. I still have upgraditus but at least I'm getting most of the lower octave while I wait on the finances. David
"Because it's a cheap POS that doesn't go very deep without getting boomy and resonating/buzzing so I have to adjust the gain very carefully for different kinds of output. Slow and muddy too. " Are you referring to the sub or the BFD? You responded to the post about the BFD so I'll assume...
"Oh man, I know about that thing! But I'm a musician, so I've seen it in mags, online, etc. I didn't know you guys were using it for your subs, may I ask why?" Because it's the best low cost sub equalizer on the market. http://www.snapbug.ws/bfd.htm David
" Magnepan has 1sseveral other inexpensive models (MMG-Ws, MC1s) that actually have greater WAF than most boxes do." My wife just voted you off the island. As much as I appreciate Maggies, I stood no chance of having them in her livingroom. :frowning: David
MMG's and 340's are so different that getting other people's opinions is not going to help much. They are both very good but again they are just too different in all aspects to even be compared. Some points to consider besides sound. The 340's are versatile. They are efficient 8ohm speakers...
I consider the BFD a requirement with all non-EQ'ed subs. The BFD is not cheaply made. It's an inexpensive unit that does things that usually cost a lot more. You have to expect some compromises. That dosen't equate to cheap. David
Is it worth to upgrade? Yes. Most definitely. should I just stick with this Athena 8" sub until I save up some more $$$ to get the Velodyne, HSU or even SVS subs maybe in the next few years? It might be worth waiting if were a matter of months but a few years is way too long to wait...
Jim, C'mon over to the Ascend Forum. Good people (some who also post here) with a lot of experience. We always love to talk speakers. :emoji_thumbsup: http://forum.ascendacoustics.com/ David
