    Help with crossover selection?

Actually the tweeter is not too bad especially for the money, but the woofer is a bit of a dud. I found it to not only sound bad but the break-up in the upper ranges make it unusable for anything over 1kHz (unless you like the sound of a ringing metal cone). Such drivers are not easy to work...

Damping Material In Subs. Why Bother?

Technically yes, but not much. Maybe half of a db at best. Also, it may give a little at 20Hz but you may also loose a little at 50Hz as the bottom end starts to roll off a little sooner.

Damping Material In Subs. Why Bother?

Yea, yea, that's funny too. As a loudspeaker designer I always have to consider what women think about the look of a design. You'd be surprised how many men have told me that they really wanted to build a line source speaker but the wife said no way.

Damping Material In Subs. Why Bother?

I thought that was your final post. :D

Damping Material In Subs. Why Bother?

Oh boy what a thread. Think of the damping material as something used to tune a box. Adding more damping to the box means that the woofer has to force the air in the box through the damping material. This slows down the air flow in the box and makes the box appear to be larger than...

Questions about using a Kit-281 as a center

Todd, what happens when you lay an MTM speaker on its side, then move off axis, you get into a situation where one woofer is further away (in time) than the other. Once it is delayed enough to be out of phase with the other woofer it cancels it and causes a dip in the response. How far off...

Thanks Eric, If you like the cleaner more accurate sound and want the energetic punch as well, then you'll have to look to some of our larger models. :) I bet your parents are pleased. Nice job.

    help on theater design

I agree and have found that the smaller drivers have many advantages over larger ones, and yes, high SPL's at low frequencies does require greater Sd's. One always has to weigh out what is important to them. High SPL's are not hard to make. Sound quality is a different issue, and where I...

Sorry Thomas, but the only thing being sold here is some technical knowledge and some common sense.

    help on theater design

There is nothing wrong with utilizing reflected energy so long as when the signal reaches your ear it accurately reproduces the signal that it was supposed to. Obviously sending high frequency in one direction, mids one way and lows another will not be accurate and could indeed be called...

    help on theater design

The very idea that a woofers output across the board is limited by its size is false. This line of thinking is only valid in regards to low frequency signals. If a sub-woofer is used to cover the first octave and a half then driver size verses output capability is a non issue (within...

    5 channel DYI?

Okay Chris, Just let me know when you are ready. You can still come over to Gary Dodd's this Saturday if you want and hear some speakers over there. There is a set of A/V-1's there now. I am also only about an hour and 45 minutes away if you want to come up here. You can bring your...
