The "designing the perfect subwoofer driver" thread...

Yeah, Mark. That demo was impressive. Were you in Kevin's room later that evening? They cranked it up quite a bit more, and at higher volumes as the non-XBL2 started to 'glare' and get distorted, the XBL2 still sounded really clear in comparison. The difference was extremely obvious. The...

    The ProSoundWeb LAB Subwoofer Project

Mark, I'm building a pair of speakers using Bruce's 100hz bass horns and some round horns w/ compression drivers. I've been looking at a couple things to fill in the bass... I can't really bring the speakers out into the room much, which means I doubt I can put the LAB in the corner, it...

I built an IB sub...wanna see it?

I can't modify my walls (renting)... but maybe if I get a piece of plywood that fits this window.... :D Charlie

Hrm... but in an Isobaric, while one driver is moving 'out', the other is moving 'in'. I expect if you mounted on opposite sides of a hole in 3/4" MDF or plywood, you wouldn't have any problems. Charlie

'Sealed' Infinite Baffle (articles in Audioxpress)

Anybody catch these articles? I saw just the second one, and I'm still trying to get the first from AudioXpress (unless anybody has it?) Anyway, what do you think of this? It seems like a dipole where dampening material is used as opposed to a baffle to slow down the air coming from the back...

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

Thanks a lot, man. I'll probably do what I can with the linkwitz, and then do a simple shelf EQ, that or take care of the last bit in a parametric or graphic EQ. Charlie

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

I'll probably use the linkwitz (which gives about 6db gain at 30hz, at a setting of F=30hz, Qtc = .5). The remaining 6db can be handled alright by a shelving EQ. My last concern is the linkwitz offers more gain below 30hz (continues up to about 8-9db at 20hz, and 12db down near DC). These...

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

Well, I have a separate spreadsheet that shows me the curve of the linkwitz transform. The thing is, if I want the higher freqs 12db down from where they are, then with the linkwitz I would want about 12db gain at 30hz or so, right? (which would subsequently be attenuated 12db, leaving 30hz at...

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

Here's the best way I can describe it: Using unibox, it draws me a nice line that is the output of the woofer at maximum excursion, passes through the point 30hz, 106dB. I figure for music, 30hz extension is plenty, and I'll probably have some under that. With ultimately two woofers and/or...

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

I heard Mike Bates's system at the Midwest Audiofest, and he has real nice horns and two HUGE woofer boxes. They sure sound great. Even going to bass horns was pushing it in terms of space. I really don't have room for many cubic feet. The thing is, I don't really want any more output than the...

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

I think the response I need is similar to the shelf EQ's used for baffle-step correction, only it needs to be 'tighter', as in transition over a smaller frequency range. Basically I need a filter with 0db from DC (or low, whatever), up to around 30hz, then transition to -9db up around 80hz...

Is this what a linkwitz transform is for?

I'm looking to build a sub (or subs) to fill in the bottom end on my speakers, which are 103-104db/watt/meter efficient 100hz exponential horns. It's not quite so much a sub as a 'woofer', since there is some response in the >100hz range. I'm rather limited on space, so I was fiddling with some...

The "designing the perfect subwoofer driver" thread...

JOOC, anybody know offhand what the transient response of the Linkwitz transform looks like? Everyone says, "Lets go sealed to keep good transient response." and then says "Let's EQ the hell out of it to get lots of bass." I'm not quite certain that this EQ is free in terms of...

Welcome back to the Advanced/DIY section!

The Klipsch reference center (RC-3) is 2.5 way. Also, the entire new Klipsch reference line (RF-5, RF-7, RC-7, etc...) are all 2.5 way. Charlie

    Transparency vs. Brightness

dougW, what is a better question is why you think that failable human hearing and perception, along with the errors introduced in the speaker and amplifier will reveal a difference that a high-resolution scope directly on the interconnect can not. We do not need or even WANT a process that 100%...
