I run analog out from from an SD9200 to 3801 to Monitor Audio Silver 5is. I use the digital out of a Yamaha CDC-585. I have spent a lot of time doing A/B testing (digital vs. analog) and must admit that with my system and my ears discerning the difference is not always easy.
Brian, I did get my speakers in the metroplex, in Plano. There is a small custom HT shop just down the street from me that carries them. Otherwise, I haven't seem the speakers around in many places. In fact, that's the only place I've seen them and they had them set up with a 3801 and that's...
Also, when/if you get a 24/96 DVD you'll need to check and make sure that your DVD player will send the digital signal out at full resolution. The Toshiba SD-9200, for instance, down converts the digital out and so the only way to hear the higher resolution is through the internal D/As...
It seems what the 9200 lacks that the newer high-end DVD audio players offer is in terms of base manegment (and time managment with the higher Denon). If either or both of these features is important, then you'll have to get an Outlaw ICBM (or something) with the 9200 or look at the new models...
I bought an SD9200 for $470 at Tweeter about a month ago. I also bought a warranty because there has been a question as to some type of manufacturing defect with the transport mechanism. Of course, since I bought the warranty everything seems fine (although perhaps I haven't had it long enough)...
KeithH is right about the transport issues on the 9200, as various threads reveal. However, $499 + $130 for a 5-year warranty = $630. That is not a bad price for a widely acclaimed audio section that the Toshiba has.
Jay or JoshS,
Any updates on you or your friend's units?!
It sounds like the problem is fixable, but at what cost (both time and money)? or at least still usable even with this nagging noise.
With the price of this unit going the same way as tech stocks it's really getting tempting...
Dave,
Have you done or are you going to do anything about that infamous rumbling noise?
I'm extremely intested in the 9200, esp. if Tweeter has it for 500 bucks, but am concerned about this problem and if there is any resolution.
Funny you should ask about the changer speed. I bothered to do some informal timing before I bought the Yamaha. The x85 (or at least the 585) normally changes songs in random mode (between discs) at around 8 seconds or so.
I too was surprised at the slowness of the CA70ES. I guess, though...
Also...
The way I understand it, Yamaha's newer models start with the x85, which came out last year. They stopped making the high end 7xx (with ProBit etc.) and now only make the 5xx and 6xx. That's why there is no "785."
I'm pretty sure that the 685 is newer than the 775. I bought the 585 (which is the same unit as the 685 other than the extra front-plate buttons). The 585 was appreciably better sounding than the Sony DVP-C670D I previously owned (which isn't the CA70ES at all). The CA70ES is an older unit...
