    Sony STR-DA4ES vs. 5ES Receivers

The 4ES does not have the mid band in the surround and surround-back channels. I have updated the original (now quite old!) post.

    Sony 4ES EQ ??

The surround and surround-back speakers have only a two band EQ. Only the front and centre speakers have the mid band. Consider yourself lucky... new STR-DAx000ES owners will find that now only the center has a mid band.

What are these Sony "V" series ES receivers???

Roland, The V555ES (et all) directly preceeded the DA3ES/DA5ES models. They have a five channel amp, and 5.1 channel pre-amp outputs, limiting you to a 5.1 setup. Curiously, you can use a surround-back speaker with them if you give up your front center speaker. Kind of a useless feature I...

Denon 2900 DACs vs. Sony DA4ES DACs

FWIW, the STR-DA4ES uses a Burr-Brown PCM1604Y 6-channel 192/24 DAC for the front, surround, center, and subwoofer channels, and a PCM1737E 2-channel 192/24 DAC for the surround-back channels. You will see benefit from using the analog output of the CD player only if you use the 4ES' analog...

    200watt vs 125 watt amp

In terms of difference in loudness, you will gain: 10*log(200/125) = 2.0 dB. Is the extra cost worth 2 dB? Klipsch speakers are generally very efficient, so you do not need gobs of power to achieve high output levels with them.

Is this a good 6.1 home theater setup?

Definitely consider 6 S38 speakers instead of 5 plus a "center channel" speaker. No center channel speaker could possibly be as good a sonic match to the S38 as another S38. The S38's horizontal stature makes it an ideal candidate for use as center channel speaker. This should save you money as...

    Sony receiver help

Here's the deal with the Sony auto-detect. The receiver checks both of the digital inputs to see if there is a signal, and if there is, then it uses it instead of the analog inputs. It is important to know two things: First, the Coax input is higher priority that the optical input, so if both...

    Sony DA4ES Protection Mode

Set the 4/8 Ohm switch on the back of the receiver to the 4 Ohm position. This lowers the voltage of the amplifier power supply rails, which will reduce the power dissipation of the amplifiers. Did you have the speaker switch to "Off"? Try that as well. You could also try removing fuses...
