B&W updates Formation speaker line software

Bowers & Wilkins has updated its music app for all Formation-enabled products, including the Formation Bar sound bar and Formation Bass subwoofer. The company is building out the number of music streaming services accessible to owners of products in the line, and the app will be available in both Android and iOS flavors.

B&W says the new app, known officially as ‘B&W Music App’, will initially offer support for Qobuz, TIDAL, TuneIn, Dash Radio, NTS Radio and SoundCloud with more services coming down the line, as well as high-res content care of Qobuz. It will also aggregate content from each available music service into one interface to access individual tracks, albums, playlists and radio stations.

This latest app will operate alongside the existing B&W ‘Home App’ currently used for setup on Formation products, but both will be integrated later in the year with the latter eventually being phased out. AirPlay 2, Bluetooth aptX HD, Spotify Connect, Roon and Works with Alexa will still be supported, however. As promised in its original 2019 launch, B&W will continue to expand the features and operability of the Formation ecosystem, with support for custom installation platforms, such as Control4, also to come.

B&W brand president Geoff Edwards said, “I’m delighted to announce this significant extension in the scope and capability of our class-leading Formation technology. The new Music App is a statement of our intent to further develop and improve our Formation-enabled product portfolio and I’m certain it will help us continue to set the gold standard for wireless speaker sound quality going forwards.”
