A few words about…™ Jurassic World Dominion — in 4k UHD Blu-ray

In a World of wannabe 4k releases, Universal’s new Jurassic World Dominion stands out a the reference disc of the month(s).

Photographed in large format, and finished as a 4k DI, the new film – released in both theatrical as well as extended (an additional 14 minutes) versions – looks magnificent in projection, and room filling with audio in DTS:X.

With the return of the original (adult) players, Dern, Neill and Goldblum, possibly things have gone full circle enough to allow the series to rest for a bit. Watching Ms. Dern (now a lovely 55), and Mr. Neill (a still handsome 74) are a pleasure, while -at least to my eye – Mr. Goldblum seems to be doing those Apartment commercials in character, and its odd.

While Dominion is in no way an equal to the original, there’s enough meat on the bones to fulfill the needs of a modern audience which is aligned with the synthesized worlds of Marvel and DC.

The effects are fine, and kudos must go to Fran Allyson for her work with the puppets here, as Ollie remains as fear-inspiring as ever on a huge screen.

A fun film, but somehow I long for the intelligence of something by Robert Bolt.

For those seeking Universal 4k product, I’ve found the best place, especially during sales, which occur often, is Gruv.

Image – 5

Audio – 5 (DTS-X)

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors – Yes

Makes use of and works well in 4k – 5

I believe the apartments.com

character seems to be based somewhat on his Jurassic Park (TM) (OG) character and others he has played ...

I saw this film in theaters, and though there are some cool setpieces, it couldn't escape the fact that Jurassic jumped several sharks with Dominion — even more than Fallen Kingdom. I'm passing on this disk.

I must also give kudos for the uncredited work of Fran Allyson:)
As a Gen Xer, it took me awhile to place the reference.

I have found the last three films to be pretty much the definition of "fine." I think I got a bigger kick out of the meta-commentary of Jurassic World than a lot of folks and I especially liked some of the dark undertones and visuals of Fallen Kingdom, but they were both three star films for me. This one takes a bit of a step down. In seemingly an inversion of the majority of audiences, I enjoyed the first half of the film more as it took things in new directions before the second half unites everyone and it turns into, "Oh, we're doing this again, are we?" However, only owning the first one on 3D blu ray and the third on one blu, I'm planning to pick up the full-series set that was announced. I'll still skip Lost World, which I consider Spielberg's weakest film, but the other five (especially the first) I enjoyed enough to revisit in 4K.

Good to hear it looks and sounds great!

The problem with the series beyond the first one is that they never really attempted to be scary again. We never really got another scene again like that initial T-Rex attack, Nedry’s fate or the Raptors in the kitchen. TLW had one scene that came close (attack on the trailer) but even that was marred by a dumb attempt at humor, requiring the audience to believe that a field trailer like that would have any regular glass on it and a gruesome and very undeserved death of a character (not saying you’re required to follow a set of rules, but in this case it was still pretty cruel)

I thought the DTS-X audio system was a step down from Atmos? Is that true?
I think they're supposed to be equivalent, both are the top tier of each company's product.

DTS has a long history with the Jurassic franchise:

To showcase the film's sound design, which included a mixture of various animal noises for the dinosaur roars, Spielberg invested in the creation of DTS, a company specializing in digital surround sound formats.

I recall the local theater here upgrading to DTS sound specifically for the opening of Jurassic Park in 1993.

I do not believe there is or will be a 3D Blu-ray release of DOMINION.

The 3D version of Dominion wasn’t anything to write home about. Of course it would be nice to have as a viewing option though of course 3DBD releases are ultra rare these days, but in this case, we’re not missing much.

I agree. JP:D was my first theater film since covid. 3D? What 3D? It’s like they took the cork out of the 3D bottle, waved the cork over the film, and whispered 3D. Very disappointing. I enjoying my 4K viewing at home more.

I saw at at the theater because it was in 3D and was so disappointed in everything about it I have no intention of ever revisiting this failure of Hollywood groupthink again. On leaving the theater I still wanted to see a movie.

I understand everyone has an opinion, but I do not understand why you'd come into a thread centered on this film's 4K UHD release just to let everyone know how much you hated it. What IS the point, really? Obviously, you're not buying this disc, so your comment adds nothing of value to the conversation.

I found value in SFMike's comment. I saw Dominion theatrically in 2D only because the 3D was sold out. So I was hoping for a Blu-ray 3D release. At first, I was disappointed because this was not to be, since I do have the two Jurassic World discs in Blu-ray 3D. But the disappointment expressed in the 3D version in the theater tells me the lack of a 3D disc is fine. So thank you SFMike and JohnnyAngel and WillG too. Your criticisms were welcome.
