Photographed in large format, and finished as a 4k DI, the new film – released in both theatrical as well as extended (an additional 14 minutes) versions – looks magnificent in projection, and room filling with audio in DTS:X.
With the return of the original (adult) players, Dern, Neill and Goldblum, possibly things have gone full circle enough to allow the series to rest for a bit. Watching Ms. Dern (now a lovely 55), and Mr. Neill (a still handsome 74) are a pleasure, while -at least to my eye – Mr. Goldblum seems to be doing those Apartment commercials in character, and its odd.
While Dominion is in no way an equal to the original, there’s enough meat on the bones to fulfill the needs of a modern audience which is aligned with the synthesized worlds of Marvel and DC.
The effects are fine, and kudos must go to Fran Allyson for her work with the puppets here, as Ollie remains as fear-inspiring as ever on a huge screen.
A fun film, but somehow I long for the intelligence of something by Robert Bolt.
For those seeking Universal 4k product, I’ve found the best place, especially during sales, which occur often, is Gruv.
