A few words about…™ -I, The Jury — in 3D Blu-ray & 4k UHD

Full disclosure.

I’m not an expert in the world of 3D. I grew up with it as a glasses-wearing child which was problematic. There were a few that were interesting, but in most cases, they were akin to a circus act for me.

“See the incredible 3D effects!”

I grew up with House of Wax, The Maze, Rue Morgue, Kiss Me Kate and a few others, and always put them in league with the kitsch of the William Castle films. I recall that for KMK, the 3D bits were actually release cut into prints.

As we learned from Dial “M,” sometimes less is more, and the shot of the scissors always stands out, and stands that 3D test of time in my eyes.

I missed I, The Jury. I’ve never seen it in any format, and as I was following the UCLA / Roundabout restoration, I became more and more interested because of the man behind the camera(s), the great John Alton.

Franz Waxman’s music isn’t a bad attribute either.

More disclosure.

I had forgotten that 4k doesn’t equate with 3D, and that the disc I attempted to play first. And it didn’t work.

After realizing my error, I switched to the Blu-ray and was immediately amazed, engrossed, and impressed.

This is the finest 3D presentation that I ever recall seeing.

Gorgeous black & white cinematography, beautiful black levels, grain, grain scale – everything in it’s proper place.

And the registration / alignment of the imagery as good as one might possibly present.

Preston Foster, short a few huskies works nicely in his role, while Bill Elliot seems always playing his role acting between 8.5 and 10, when the character might take on a far greater range. But that may be the direction of Harry Essex, a decent craftsmanlike writer, who never made it as a director. I’m unaware of Mr. Elliot’s work in other films, who we’ll allow that presumption of direction.

And here’s what I found interesting. Normally, and I will accept correction from those more knowledgable in the arena, many 3D films don’t make great use of the process – but I, The Jury is full 3D in basically every frame – even in close-ups. It grabs your attention and sticks with you. No eye strain. No problems short of the fact that I’d love a bit more brightness, but didn’t want to start messing with controls.

Classic Flix’s new 3D release is about as 3D as anyone is going to find, and sits atop the 3D mountain, along with those rare WB and M-G-M titles that work in the format.

Having read https://www.hometheaterforum.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/02/xfileheader-1.jpg’s review, I heartily concur.

Deserves a place in every 3D library.

Audio – 5

Pass / Fail – Pass

Plays nicely with projectors – Yes

I am very much looking forward to watching this title and anticipating I'll be updating my 3D list rankings based on what I have heard about this release to date.

Disappointed, but not really surprised, to see the 3D The Diamond Wizard review itself, and the prior mention of it in this review have both been scrubbed from the forum. I can only guess that someone threw a fit because it wasn't a "rave" review? [I got to read the DW review in full before it was deleted.]

I read it, also, I’d call it a mixed review, giving the benefit of the doubt that elements used were the best available. I’m not aware, is it common practice to remove less than fully positive reviews after they’re posted? Others are obviously free to disagree and discuss, at least I’d hope so. Unless there’s something misleading or dishonest about a posting, censorship is disturbing. Not referring to disallowing personal attacks or political diatribes. Heaven knows, there’s already too much of that and this site is right to police those references. This wasn’t a title I was familiar with and wouldn’t have thought much one way or the other about it except now I’m bothered by its absence. Perhaps the new owners and/or moderators can explain their standards and practices more fully at some point in the appropriate forum.

Neither the owners nor moderators had anything to do with that review being deleted.

I was about to say the same thing. FWIW, I will be doing the HTF review for that title and (as is the case with every other review I’ve done here), I have not been asked in advance or advised to come to any conclusion or assign any grading. I have not received the disc yet but will view it without any outside considerations and my conclusions will be my own.

I respect that we have so many industry insiders who choose to share their time with us at the forum, but I would never let that factor into what the review said. Our insiders also respect us and our process enough to know never to ask for anything other than our honest opinion.

Well I certainly appreciate what Mr. Crawford and Mr. Steinberg have posted. The situation here sounds a bit mysterious, but we outside observers and fans of this site appreciate the candor to the extent they are able.

Good to know. I'll have to start thinking about saving screenshots or doing a copy/paste from now on if we cannot depend on posted information to remain posted absent intervention from the administration.
Again, the forum's administration had nothing to do with that review's deletion. I don't think I have to spell it out to you.

Nope. Watching the shenanigans in a couple of different threads here this week I can form a pretty clear picture of what happened.
And you would be wrong. There was no fit throwing, no vitriol, and no shenanigans.

RAH stated that he felt DW was practically 2D. I stated that I felt that statement was wrong since I had seen it twice at the Egyptian. I felt the film was as three dimensional as any other film from that time period. I also stated that when I received the disc itself in a couple of weeks I would come back and post my impressions. Another person agreed with my statements regarding how 3D the movie was. Shortly after that, the thread was gone. It's obvious that RAH himself deleted the thread. Why he did so is his to explain or not as he sees fit.

One can disagree with a statement without insults, innuendo, or shenanigans. I feel I was respectful to RAH. If he feels I disrespected him in any way, he is welcome to address it with me.

I accept your apology.
You’re always respectful and a gentleman. I believe Malcolm may have been referencing a “discussion” started in the Jekyll thread that began with unpleasantries and went downhill from there. It was removed and I’ll not comment further.

Shortly thereafter I viewed Jury and Diamond back to back, and posted my reviews.

I was unimpressed with Diamond - I did not give it a Fail - but opined that it might have element-based problems and that any work performed made things as good as they could get. I then, knowing the craziness of the business at the moment, had a further thought that possibly Kino had released the wrong master - partially based upon your comments.

And did not want what I considered to be a questionable review standing, and removed it of my own accord.

No mystery. No intrigue.

Apologies for any confusion.

Addition:

Apparently, ThadK by virtue of his ha-ha comment below has additional information, or knows more of the truth of the situation. I’ll allow him to fill in the blanks.

As you can see, Mr Harris, many people respect your viewpoint and opinions, and understandably might feel distress that something you wrote would disappear. Thank you for clearing it up, and this should only enhance everyone’s appreciation for your sense of fairness and unbiased approach.

Thank you.

I do my best to remain fair, accurate, and have a bit of fun along the way. Toward full disclosure, while I receive review copies on some product, I always make it known with publishers that when they are unable to accommodate, and I need to purchase, it has zero affect on my words.

I’m certain that’s the same for all reviewers here.

So I've read Mr. Harris' thoughts and Mr. Hough's review and have pre-ordered the disc. Thank you for bringing this to our attention; there's no way it would have been on my radar otherwise.

But I'm a little confused as to why there is no mention about the UHD disc that is in the package... I'm wondering if it's just because the real draw of this movie is the 3D presentation or if it's a clue that the 4k transfer is subpar.
