Thought to be among the lost M-G-Ms, the film was discovered by a collector who donated it to The Oregon Historical Society, which in turn donated it to the AFI. From there it went to the LoC, which created the restoration accessed for the new Kino Blu-ray disc.
The surviving print is in generally lovely condition ex a bit of occasional decomp (mostly the opening), and some spaces, generally at the heads and tails of reels. Fortunately, the two color Technicolor final sequence is intact.
I’m a huge Lillian Gish fan, and while she received name above the title credit, the reality is that the film is more of a production featuring Norman Kerry, who most of you will know from the silent Phantom of the Opera. Mr. Kerry began his career in 1916, and mad his final appearance in 1941.
A new original score is performed by the superb Robert Israel.
The film was re-made by M-G-M in 1936 starring Ann Rutherford and Dennis Morgan.
