What is tagging?  Why is it important?

Tags allow information from around the community to be aggregated together.  They are labels that can be added to forum posts or Wiki articles (and even images themselves) to tie pieces of content together to make relevant information easier to find. The goal is not to tag everything with as many tags as possible, but to use the fewest number of tags possible to accurately describe a piece of content (a forum thread or Wiki article.)

There are a few different kinds of tags, namely Movie or HT Equipment specific Tags, Category Tags, and Topic Tags. As the name implies, every piece of gear/resort on the site has its own specific tag - you can also see a list of all Topic and Category tags here. More detail about each type of tag is below.

Movie/HT Equipment Tags are unique identifiers for a specific product, such as Firefly-The-Complete-Series.  These tags are used to tie together content that is relevant to  specific, individual movies/equipment.  It is important to tag threads and Wikis with product tags so that interesting, relevant product information can be pulled onto the movie/equipment portals to create an easy way for new users to find what they're looking for in the forums, Wikis and elsewhere in the site - see below:

In this way, users coming in from Google, or who browse the movie and equipment portal pages of the site can easily be directed into the most relevant discussion threads, Wiki articles, read reviews, etc. all from one place. Hopefully this can spread the amazing resource that is Home Theater Forum.

Topic Tags are broader.  For example, Category Tags are a particular type of Topic Tag.  If a thread or Wiki discusses an entire category from the movie and equipment listings, such as a Wiki article on How To Buy Surround Sound Speakers, it is better to tag the content with "surround-sound-speakers", as opposed to having to tag it with EVERY tag for EVERY surround sound speaker in the system. The category tags are intelligent enough that if you use one to tag a thread or a Wiki, it will then link that content as relevant to EVERY movie or piece of gear that lives under that category.

Other Topic Tags refer to an interesting topic such as "DIY" can be used to tie together all the threads about making your own subwoofers and cables, etc.  A complete list of Topic and Category Tags can be found here.  This link is also embedded in the tagging tool when you click on the "Search" option. Usage of these tags will populate both the tags' pages, as well as Related Content on the sidebar of most every page of the site.

How is the tagging on this site different than other sites?

The difference between our tagging infrastructure and others you may be familiar with is that we restrict tagging to tags that exist in our system. Many other sites enable you to freely enter any tag of your choosing. The difficulty is that you may tag a forum thread with "Terminator-2-Judgment-Day" and someone else may tag with "T2" and suddenly this similar content is not linked. By enforcing more rigidity in the tagging system, the hope is that we are much more effective at aggregating ALL content relevant to a given product or topic.

Add Product Tags To Forum Posts And Wiki Articles

  1. Navigate to the forum thread or Wiki article that you would like to tag.  At the top of the forum thread, under the Title, you will see the "Add/Remove Tags" button.  On a Wiki article, you will find the button on the right hand side, underneath the "Wiki Tags" box.

  4. You also have the option to browse Product Tags.  Click the drop down menu to narrow down to a particular product.  Then narrow down to a sub-category, select a manufacturer, and browse the available Product Tags.
  5. Select tags from the list by clicking on them.  They will appear in your Queue.
  6. When you are satisfied with your selection, click "Add Tags From Queue."  Your tags will not be added until you click to save.

Note: The same tagging tool is available on Image Info pages as well.  If you add a tag to an Image, it will automatically appear on that tag page and the main Product Portal associated with that tag.

View Tag Pages

Each Product, Category, and Topic Tag has a unique Tag Page.  On the Tag Page, you will see all the forum threads and Wiki articles that have been tagged with that particular tag, as well as the content that is related to that tag.

To view a Product Tag page from a forum thread or Wiki, simply click on the tag in the tag list.  To view a Product Tag page from the Product Page, click the "More Related Forum Threads And Wiki Articles" button.

To view a Category Tag page from a forum thread or Wiki, simply click on the tag in the tag list.  To view a Category Tag page from the category itself, look at the right hand column of Related content (e.g. Threads and Wikis related to the category).  At the bottom of each Related content box, you will see a "More" button.  That button will take you to the Tag page.

To view any other Topic Tag page, click on the tag from the tag list or navigate to the tag from the Topic Tag page

  1. Navigate to the tag page of the Topic Tag.
  2. At the top of the page, toward the right hand side, you will see the "Subscribe to this Tag" button.
