Currently my rear speakers are at shoulder height, facing in, and inline with the listeners head. Should they be up higher pointing down........or up higher facing in towards the listener........or same height and behind??????

I'd say about 1 and 1/2 feet above your head, but you might want to experiment a bit to see what you like the best.

It is a cliche, but whatever sounds best to you as well as what you're room allows in terms of placement.
