OK, I'll bite. let's see:-

ACTION/ADVENTURE:
3/6. but thinking about getting the other 3

COMEDY:
only 1/5. might get one more.
edit: actually 2/5 (didn't know what "Powers Pack" was at first; I have both, though bought separately when they came out). might get two more (looked more carefully at titles)

DRAMA:
3/7. unlikely to get more.

FAMILY:
currently 2/5, will definitely get 1 more.

FOREIGN:
1/5, unlikely to get more.

HORROR:
not a horror fan. 0/5

MUSICALS:
surprisingly 3/5.

SCI-FI/FANTASY:
assuming Matrix (Gold) means with Matrix Revisted, I have 3/5, will get FOTR:EE soon, and will get Blade Runner when the super-duper box set finally shows up. not surprising since I consider myself a sci-fi fan.

TV:
have all of MASH, Sex/City and Sopranos out so far. seasons 1-4 of TNG, will get rest sooner or later. won't be getting Simpsons, might get 24, won't get X-Files

ESSENTIAL BOX SETS:
have Alien, The Godfather and James Bond. quite enough, thank you...

EXTRAS! EXTRAS! (Selected for Extra Value Content):
have 2 and will be getting SW2 soon

GUILTY PLEASURES:
strangely I have one of these :b

bleh. I have too many DVDs...

Sure, I'll bite:
ACTION/ADVENTURE: 5/6 (which version of Spartacus did they mean?)
COMEDY: 4/5 (which "Monty Python: SE" item did they mean? Since I have the majority of the Python films and indeed the big TV show box set, I'll count it as a "yes". Also, assuming "Powers Pack" = Austin Powers 1 & 2)
DRAMA: 5/7
FAMILY: 5/5
FOREIGN: 0/5 (I *do* like Foreign films...I just don't happen to want any of these except for Das Boot)
HORROR: 4/5 (decided with Spartacus not to be a slave to which precise version they name, so I include Exorcist as a "yes", even though I plan to never own TVYNS...25th Anniversary version for me, baby!)
MUSICALS: 4/5
SCI-FI/FANTASY: 5/5 (just bought one of these on Sunday!)
TV: 7/7 (what did you expect from me? :D Plus, I own every season named except S6 of X-Files, which should be coming for Christmas)
...as for the "extras":
ESSENTIAL BOX SETS: 4/8 (do they realize Alien Legacy goes OOP on 1/31/03?)
EXTRAS! EXTRAS! (Selected for Extra Value Content): 3/7
GUILTY PLEASURES: 3/6
Tally: I own 39 of their top 50 (generally speaking, even if specific versions might not match up, like Exorcist & Memento), and 10 of their 21 "Gotta Have" extras.

The Python DVD is .... Monty Python and the Holy Grail: SE (2-disc).

Spartacus is the Criterion from the Kubrick Collection.

(I've edited original post to reflect these particulars. Sorry. I should have put them in correctly to begin with.):b

Added Notation: In case someone didn't realize it, "Powers Pack" = The first 2 Austin P. films.
Heck, I didn't realize this myself. (Not much of a Powers Promoter am I. Don't have any Powers flicks. :))

I've actually got a few of those.
But Marx's joke about not wanting to belong to a club that would allow guys like him in, seems a propos :)

OK, here's my count:
ACTION/ADVENTURE: 6/6
COMEDY: 5/5
DRAMA: 7/7
FAMILY: 4/5 (Never got into the Wonka thing)
FOREIGN: 4/5 (All but Blue Angel)
HORROR: 1/5 (Just The Exorcist - guess I better get to work on this category!)
MUSICALS: 5/5
SCI-FI/FANTASY: 4/5 (Waiting for the long-awaited new SE of Blade Runner)
TV: 7/7 (Wow - I guess I'm a TV on DVD junkie)
Total: 43/50
ESSENTIAL BOX SETS: 5/8 (Missing "Baseball", Garland, & Carson)
EXTRAS! EXTRAS! (Selected for Extra Value Content): 7/7
GUILTY PLEASURES: 1/6 (Only "Twin Peaks", & I don't feel guilty about it at all!)
Total "Must Haves": 13/21
Overall, I thought this was a pretty well-informed list (quite a few Criterions, for example). Of course, I have a few quibbles here & there, but this would be a pretty good list to give to someone just getting into DVD who wants tips on starting a good collection.
They kind of cheated on the TV category. Supposedly representing 7 DVDs, the sum total of these sets is actually 119 individual discs!!

I concur, Jalil! Exactly what I was thinking when I was writing those up for this thread. :)
COMEDY:
Monty Python and The Holy Grail: SE
Powers Pack: First 2 Austin Powers Films
Say Anything
Some Like It Hot: SE
This Is Spinal Tap: SE
I would think this list could use some work. Is Say Anything actually a "comedy"? I thought it was more of a drama.

Kids o' HTF ..... You CAN officially count The Exorcist when tallying your data, even if you only have the 25th Anniv. edition. It's close enough.
I called and got Congressional approval to allow this for the purposes of this most important HTF survey. :D

I would have also included the Mary Tyler Moore Show: Season One box set in there somewhere.

Why was Blood Simple selected for extras content? Was it because of the bogus commentary?

I would have voted for these two in the Comedy category. They're older titles, but just get better with age (IMO) :) ..........
