Directors HTF Tournament: Reviving the Icons of Cinema (1 Viewer)

What if Stanley Kubrick personally finished Eyes Wide Shut? What if David Lean lived to create the work known as Nostromo? What would John Wayne say about this day and age? What if Alfred Hitchcock had the filmmaking tools of today? How would Marilyn Monroe look?
The premise behind this whole tournament is this: if we could bring back only one gigantic icon of cinematic history from the dead to continue their work, who would it be? The idea here is that whoever we do bring back, the assumption is going to be made that they will be at the top of their career. This will be David Lean with his epic pictures, Hitchcock with his genius of Vertigo, this will be Clark Gable of Gone With The Wind, or even Kubrick during the time he made the sci-fi masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Interesting idea. I might start a secondary tourney taking off on the idea, "who, dead, would you like to see still alive and working?" and I have a ton I'd love to see. For one, I'd love to see more work by Brandon Lee, but he doesn't fit in this because he was too young and inexperienced at the time of his death to be an icon.

I would have nominated Sturges, but Harold Lloyd immediately popped into my head. I saw Speedy in the theater a few weeks ago and had thought then, 'wouldn't he be making great movies if he were alive today?' and didn't think of Sturges until Evan's post.
I realized that if I started another tourney, it'd be just like this one, with the exception of including younger and less-well-known people (like Brandon Lee and Dominique Dunne). Maybe I could limit it to, uh, dead non-iconic-but-maybe-they-could-have-been film people. Hmmm, maybe "The Good Die Young" tourney? Has there already been one like that?

I was clearly thinking bodies of work, and I didn't want to limit myself to just actors or just directors. The line of thinking was simply, "Wow, [insert name here] made/was in some of my favorite movies but they're dead now. What would it be like if they came back?"

When the actually voting starts, I don't see a problem at all with pitting actors versus directors. Some people might think, "Alfred Hitchcock is my favorite director, but I would rather see Bogey in another film."

The other reason for so many actors nominated over directors mostly has to do with my limited knowledge of "big name" directors who are dead. It's fairly obvious how limited it was: I thought Ingmar Bergman was dead. :b
