The DVD that everyone has patiently been waiting
for all these years finally arrived at my doorstep
today.
Unfortunately, my schedule for the next four days
is quite hectic. It will take me till early next
week to post the kind of in-depth review all of you
expect from me.
I didn't want to keep you guys on hold too long,
and I certainly wanted to say something about this
DVD since other review websites will be posting their
comments as early as tomorrow, I expect.
I took a look at Back To The Future, the film
that started it all. I'll give you a preview of what
I thought...
The transfer is quite good, but somehow I expected
something a little better. The picture looks a little
dated. Flesh tones are a little overly red in some
areas and more accurate in others. There is a
noticeable amount of film grain throughout --
especially in the dark scenes. It can be a bit
annoying at times. Colors are very vibrant here.
I was very disappointed that Universal, of all studios,
opted not to include a DTS track. The good news is, the
5.1 surround track is extremely aggressive here, and
sounds absolutely phenomenal. I was quite happy to
hear so much effect noise thrown to the rears and
some nice booming support from the LFE channel.
The soundtrack doesn't sound compressed, almost
sounding as good as what I would expect from a DTS
track.
There are just tons of material to go through here
and I still have two more films to watch. I don't
want to do a review that cuts any corners. If you
guys give me till Tuesday I'll put together a real
nice in-depth review with tons of screenshots,
including those from the supplements as well.
See you in the near FUTURE!

I already own the Dutch R2 version which totally rocks imo, there were no commentaries for BTTF 2 & 3 however. Will they be on the R1 ?
This is great as I will also be buying the R1 version

AWESOME RON!!!! I can't wait for the in-depth review!!!! If it is done by Tuesday, I bet that you will have the first review of the Region 1 BTTF DVD. I like the slipcover alot. This is the one DVD I have wanted an in-depth review on all year, I am sure that you won't let me down. Thanks! :D
Also I forgot something, Ron. Is it possible that you could get a good picture of the back of the case?

VERY nice looking! My most-anticipated DVD release of Quarter 4. Hope the content is as nice as the packaging looks, and that the weird framing issues on R4 are a non-issue on this one.

Got a lend of the r4 versions and theres no difference (to my hearing) that separates the DD5.1 or the DTS. Bob Gale said that he found no difference either.
Personally i'm goin for the r1 as it should have an extra commentary from Michael J. Fox. But i'll know come Tuesday weather thats ture or not.

Well, I can deal with a less-than-perfect transfer so I'll be picking up the BTTF trilogy the second it comes out. :) Actually, I'll be buying two sets - one for me and one for my young nephews. I'll think they'll get a kick out of 'em!

WAHOOO! They look great. Must own...

I agree, the slipcase is most awesome. Goodbye VHS copies. You were most loyal. It was nice knowing you. Hello DVDs.

Apparently there was some overmatting of some shots in the Region 4 (and probably other int'l regions as well). Particularly in Part II when Marty shrinks up the sleeves of his future jacket. The frame is matted in such a way that you can't even see the sleeves (thus ruining that gag).

Now, when compared to the full screen version, and the letterbox laserdisc, it is obvious that the film was matted too high in that shot (and a few others).

I have my fingers crossed with hope that they corrected it for this Region 1 version. Hopefully you'll be able to give us some confirmation on this one, Ron? If you don't understand what I'm talking about, just be sure to include a screenshot of the shot where Marty shrinks up his sleeves, and I'll be able to tell.
