This is awesome!
I had no idea that this title was even being done by Criterion. Thanks for the link Matthew.

So I'm not alone in liking this movie!

Read Hunter's book when it was originally serialized in Rolling Stone way back in 1971. Though the film does not achieve the same level of wit, it does pose an interesting question: How best to portray, in cinematic terms, the agonies of a bad acid flashback?

To truly understand—or try to—the twisted mind of Hunter S. Thompson, though, it's best to read the man's unforgettable words (especially the ones written before he discovered cocaine).

I have the first DVD edition, still in its shrinkwrap, after all these years. What's the image quality like?

I've had the original DVD for quite some time, and have been pretty happy with it. I would consider getting this new edition if the transfer was significantly better. The commentaries would be nice, but I couldn't rationalize spending 30 or more dollars on a movie I already have just for commentaries.

So, does anyone know if this is a new transfer?

This is not a reasonable place to park?
Yes! This sounds terrific. I've read Thompson's book, and I saw the film on rental VHS two years ago. When I first heard of this release, I borrowed the tape from a friend so I could see if I still thought the film was worth getting the Criterion edition for.
Having now watched this insane attempt at psychedelic narrative a second time, I have come to the conclusion that I will definitely be taking a trip down to Bat Country as soon as this disc is up for pre-order. :emoji_thumbsup:

This one would be worth taking it up the old dirt road, and then some. This is about as exciting a release as I've read all year. I am especially pleased at the breadth of material: commentaries, deleted scenes, interviews, storyboards/designs, Steadman artwork, a documentary, Thompson correspondences: DAMN!
there goes another one

All I can say is bring it, and don't make me wait a la the original BRAZIL laserdisc! ;)

Fantastic! This is one of the great pleasures of the DVD medium, when production of a disc goes smoothly and a completely unanticipated Special Edition is announced with great-sounding extras. I knew a couple of years ago that Criterion would eventually - gradually - start springing some happy surprises on us, and this is just one of the lastest.

DTS, commentaries, lots of extras (I like that 'More!' bulletpoint on the Criterion page linked above) and a smooth addition to my Gilliam DVD collection. What a lovely sounding release.

I am so happy I had some restraint, I wanted to buy this and swingers when they first came out bareboned, I decided to wait because I hate to double dip. Gotta say I can't wait. Now if only we can get a date on BlackHawk Down, my other burst of restraint in waiting for the deluxe addition. :emoji_thumbsup: :emoji_thumbsup:

Is this gonna be a 2-disc set?

There's enough stuff on there to warrant it.

I don't want the picture quality to suffer - especially a film this colourful.

I had no idea this was even in the works. I've had the original DVD for a couple of years now, i'll definitely make the upgrade. It was even my sig for a long time :).
It says "Coming Soon", can we expect this in the 1st Q of 2003? I really dig the cover art as well.

Also,

Does anyone know if this will be distributed by Universal or Criterion?

Because it would mean a difference of about $20-$30 in Canada.

I remember seeing it in the theater and being amazed at how well Gilliiam was able to translate the hysteria of the book to the screen. I could have sworn they were pumping ether into the theater.

Add this to my must-have list.
