I see all these threads in here, "Isn't Selma Hayak hot?" or "Check out the scantily clad Beyonce in Maxim!", or the people over in video games drooling for Dead or Alive Beach volleyball with boucning scantily clad women

Why not just buy or download porn?

It's faster, there's no teasing involved because they're actually naked, and there's no strings attached

What is it in the human psyche that makes people not take the simpler road, but rather the 100x more difficult one?

I mean this for serious discussion, a serious question

Well, sometimes I just want to appreciate an attractive woman.

And sometimes there's more excitement when you don't actually know what they look like naked. Its been said that it's good to "leave the rest to the imagination".

Same reason you can can't buy porn in Best Buy -- it makes people uncomfortable.

It's more socially acceptable to publicly lust after images in mainstream media than images in porn. There's a stigma attached -- if watch porn, you must be a sex maniac or pervert. But if you just get off on mainstream cheesecake, then that's fine.

You'll rarely hear someone in public talk about the latest XXX flick, but the latest Britney Spears video or even some R-rated teen sex movie is fair game.

To understand why, I imagine you'd need to dig into the messy inner workings of America's weird Puritan hangups about sex.

Coz, you can't find naked pictures of ppl like Britney Spears or Elisha Cuthbert or Mila Kunis (maxim), or Salma Hayek, or Alyssa Milano (FHM this month) in porn... :)

I always thought these new men's magazines like FHM and Maxim was just porn for guys embarrassed to buy Playboy. I bought one at an airport once because I kind of knew one of the featured girls and was shocked at how weak the magazine's content was. Not one remotely interesting article.

But then I've always felt that what you don't see can sometimes be far more enticing. If you never really see the goods you can never really be disappointed now can you?

Oh, I already figured out that angle years ago. :) Watch Bowling for Columbine and replace "gun" with "sex" in the cartoon and it pretty much sums it up for me :)

I totally agree with what Ryan said, but that still doesn't answer the question about the reason why we get all worked up about the Stacy Keiblers  of the world.
Jeff asks the question about why we don't just go to porn to "cure" the desire. While this method may work in the short run ;) it won't cease a person from noticing an attractive, fully clothed woman.
I, for one, don't want to forget about the women I'm attracted to.

Stop that! You're warping his fragile little mind!

As for your question, Jeff, who knows. Personally, I prefer sexy clothing over nudity. Note that I said "sexy" clothing, not slutty clothing. Big difference.

Depends what's considered "mainstream media." I wouldn't open up an issue of Maxim on my daily train commute any more than I would a copy of Playboy.

for me, it's much more interesting to use your imagination.
i can see a naked chick anytime...most of the time the fantasy doesn't hold up to the reality. i know i'm about to open myself up here....but really...how many times can you stare at "you know what". ;)
for me, one of the absolute most sexy things a woman can wear is a plain oxford shirt...nothing else. that rocks me way more than a chick in some teddy-style outfit ever will.

Unfortunately for us, porn stars tend not to have the extra-curricular talents exhibited by celebrity babes. How many porn stars do you know can sing and dance and ACT at the same time?

If Britney, Beyonce, or Shakira decide to enter the porn industry, I won't complain! But, it would certainly depress many of their fans who see them as being "pure and wholesome". For them, it's not just how they look, but how they embody an ideal. Ask a fan why he/she worships a celebrity, and you'll invariably get responses like: "She is so talented" and "he is so dreamy; his songs reach into my soul". They almost never say: "He has such a tight butt, I want to squeeze them!" or "Her tits are really huge, I could play with them all day".

Yet, I can't help but feel that if the "celebrity" in question is not physically attractive (body language included) in any way, nobody would notice those "inner qualities" fans always talk about.

Heck, the obvious reason is that if you download porn, you will have to change your email address and reinstall your operating system to get rid of all the spam! ;)

I can't see how the words "Pure" and "wholesome" can be said of Britney Spears, not to mention Christina Agulara. Talk about 2 skanks totally blowing the "Sex sells" WAY out of proportion.
