 Thanks for the link Mike, we were silly back then. All that fuss over the "Sun of York". Who cares? I did apparently.

Hello Cees! Good to see you're still around. I should talk, I'm never around. 12 years ago I was bragging that I was posting in 20 different threads in one night, my how things have changed.

I was watching Olivier's Richard III a couple of weeks ago, beautifully remastered on blu-ray, and I remembered our "Sun of York" chat from years ago right here in this ancient thread... *sniff* memories. (or was that "Son of York"?) ;)

Bought Cloud Atlas on blu-ray yesterday, a strange film, the extras should be fascinating.

Also bought a book Russell might be interested in, Unfiltered - The Complete Ralph Bakshi, £10 from a west end bookshop. It's £50 at Amazon. The internet isn't always cheaper!

Oh yeah! Hey! Bakshi! I just got "Hey Good Lookin'" through the stupid Warner Archives and have the "Heavy Traffic" bluray on pre-order. I've been eye balling that book, but not seen it cheap online or local. I managed to get a really good book on Harvey "The creator of Mad Magazine" Kurtzman for about that price though!

I picked up Richard III by Criterion, but not had a chance to sit down with it.

Waiting for Cloud Atlas to hit cheap too. Now that all the video stores are gone, my buying of A List titles has shrunk considerably.

Now that all the video stores are gone, my buying of A List titles has shrunk considerably.

It's crazy, innit it?

We have seen, in our lifetimes, the creation of an industry and its near demise...all within three decades time.

In the 80s, the growth and proliferation of video rental shops was crazy.  Beta and VHS, baby!  National chains, mom & pop local shops...and everything in-between.  The eventual transitions to DVD & Blu-ray...and now, they are almost all gone.

I've got just one Blockbuster rental shop near me.  I still stop in every couple of months and see what's going on with regard to sales of previously-used titles.  But all the other chains (Hollywood Video, Movie Gallery, etc. are all gone and I don't think there's a single independent shop left either.

Ya gotta figure that in a few more years, they'll all be gone...forever.

Not sure.

But I know that I have yet to hear of an Oak Newton.

The US military gives medals with oak leaf clusters.  Never heard of a medal with fig leaf clusters.

The news media is showing photos of fireworks being set off all over Egypt.  How thoughtful of them to celebrate our Fourth of July.

Are Oak leaves replacing the use of Fig leaves?

Cees

Actually the Canadian flag sports a maple leaf.  The maple leaf flag only dates from 1965, before that the Canadians made do with the British Red Ensign.

Scott Joplin showed his preferences.  He spurned the oak leaf.

I snuck over the border to Oregon today - always feel unclean about that....

Most of the eastern 2/3 of Oregon is a dry desert, but the small corner of the far north-east contains the Blue Mountains that rise above Baker City.

Posted Image

Oregon Hwy. 73 leaves I-84 north of Baker City and heads west straight up the mountains.  It crosses over at Elkhorn Summit at 7,392 ft.

I always think most of your shots (like those above) look so much like what I've seen in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate NY and the Green Mountains of Vermont...except for those really, really, really tall mountains that you've got out West.

The tallest of the Blue Mts. is only 9,106 feet...not much of a mountain by western standards.

Neighboring states often view each other with distaste....

I'd compare Oregon/Idaho with your Mass/New Hampshire, "whatever that means".

Signs entering Oregon:

Welcome to Oregon

Seatbelt use mandatory - fine $75

Motorcycle helmet law strictly enforced

blah, blah, blah you can't do this or that

Speed limit 65 MPH

Signs entering Idaho:

Welcome to Idaho

Speed limit 75 MPH

It's actually difficult to take such a photo since they are on the interstate and you cant just pull over and start shooting.  Even on divided highways it's all but impossible.  I tried at the entry on Hwy. 95 from Oregon with limited success.  I think you need to stand way back and use a mondo telephoto lens on a tripod to get the signs all legible.

Why would I take a guess that the name of the governor is also included on the "Welcome to Oregon" signs?!?  ^_^

It is certainly the case in New York.

Actually states out here don't post the governor's name.  We're too cheap to keep changing signs.

QUIZ:  Which one is OR gov. John Kitzhaber and which one is ID gov. Butch Otter?
