The history of failed Thursday 8:30 PM shows is due to the fact that said shows sucked. They've never had a show that could take advantage of "Friends"'s huge lead-in. "Scrubs" is a quality show and I think this is smart of NBC to get it off of Tuesday night where the competition is brutal. They should be able to nurture the show into an unqualified hit in this spot. Then, in 2003, I expect they'll move "Scrubs" into the 8:00 slot to replace "Friends".

On the other hand, this looks like the death knell for "Just Shoot Me", which has always been a marginal ratings performer and is getting tired. I expect it will get slaughtered on Tuesday. I wouldn't be surprised to see it gone by mid-season.

I'm a little surprised to hear the news over at ABC. They're dropping Dharma & Greg, Spin City and even Who Wants To Be A Millionaire. Though I didn't watch these shows in the past year, so it shouldn't be that big of a shock.

A series spinoff of Dinotopia will start up - the commercials really didn't appeal to me. The Drew Carey Show is being moved to Monday @ 8pm and According To Jim is moving to Tuesday, 8:30pm.

The new season officially starts when, Labor Day weekend?

And they've also been new shows, never an established show. I'm glad to see NBC is trying something a little different with the thursday lineup this season.

Have the networks, particularly NBC, announced which shows will be broadcast in HD this Fall? Also curious if Monday Night Football will be in HD.

I think I saw a story the other day that NBC plans to broadcast their entire schedule in HD starting this fall. (I think it's just "Crossing Jordan" now)

A few other comments on NBC's schedule - "Watching Ellie" has been ordered for midseason, as have a lot of other series. They seem to be in a fairly decent "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset, while clearly setting "Scrubs" up as the heir apparent to "Friends" on Thursday. Not a lot of exciting new programs, though - I might watch "Boomtown", but I fear "In-Laws" despite a pretty decent cast. The article had them pretty excited about their development slate, but apparently not enough to lose a "Dateline" or two.

Updated with ABC and WB. Sunday at 9pm is looking brutal, especially if Fox puts "24" there (I don't imagine they'll put "Firefly" against "Angel" - why shoot yourself in the foot?)

Anyway, looks like ABC's gonna implode. I actually like the idea of putting "Drew" on Mondays before football, a sort of "guy night" thing. Even without "Millionaire", there's still a lot of filler, which has choked out what were popular shows ("Spin City", "Dharma & Greg"). And, yeah, Zap2It had "NYPD Blue" on twice. I bet the Wednesday one is actually "Primetime" or "20/20".

WB... This could work really well, or get really ugly. Also, could the last black person who is not a superhero sidekick shut the door on the way out (except "Gilmore Girls"'s Michel, of course)?

FOX has moved "The X-Files" back to Fridays for the summer. Perhaps trying to get the sci-fi audience acclimated to Fridays again and ready to stay tuned for "Firefly" come fall?

What, you mean people weren't watching "Dark Angel"? :D
I can't see them putting "Firefly" on Friday, though - that show's about as pricey as "Dark Angel", and Friday doesn't pull in the audience to pay for it. (And we're already watching "Farscape")
It almost has to go on Sunday or Tuesday. Actually, I think the perfect place would be Thursday at 9, but I don't know as Fox has the guts.

According to yesterday's New York Times, the networks are all worried about the Sunday 9pm timeslot, as well they should be. On September 15, HBO unveils season 4 of The Sopranos, and that's going to put a big dent in Sunday night viewing for the next 13 weeks. Yes, HBO will rerun Tony and his crew multiple times during the week, but most fans aren't willing to wait (I certainly am not). Alias will get taped for later viewing, and if Fox puts 24 in the same timeslot, I'll catch it on repeats or skip it altogether.

When is UPN announcing its fall schedule? There's a program on that network in which I am interested.

Remember, Will and Grace was "stuck" in the Tuesday lineup, and broke out of it to settle into the Thursday 9 p.m. slot, but I fear it will totally JTS (Jump the shark) if they do a whole season around Will and Grace bringing a baby into the mix (when "Mad About You" did this, it killed the show).

What, you don't want to snark on those of us over at the PAX network?
Oh please oh please, can't we have more of that studly hipster David Ruprect and Supermarket Sweep? I'll tell you, I just can't get enough of that family friendly humor :D
Someone needs to start Anti-Pax, nothing but offensive programming 24/7 (no, Fox doesn't count, yet)

"Millionaire" isn't cancelled; it's just going back to being a special event instead of on the weekly schedule.

Didn't know "Dinotopia" was going to be a series- was the miniseries any good?

The funny thing is, I think not doing this may have killed "Dharma & Greg". It really was the natural next step for the show, but the writers backed off, probably at least in part because of this conventional wisdom.

I haven't seen "Will & Grace" for a while, but I can't imagine how a pregnancy and/or kid would fit in there, especially if it's not being done out of necessity.

Whoa, is this right? Sundays at 9pm its potentially gonna be Law & Order: CI, 24, Alias, Angel, The Sopranos? All shows that I watch!!! This is going to require some fancy juggling between my Tivo and ReplayTV. Fortunately, some of these shows get rebroadcast at other times...

I am anxiously awaiting the Fox lineup to be announced, since most of my shows are on that net. Apparently they will unveil their schedule on Thursday, May 16th.

I hope 24 isn't on that night!

And here I was, relieved that X-Files was ending to clear up some of that Sunday night logjam. Angel at 9pm is interesting. I guess they are hoping to pick up that X-Files audience.

I am probably going to catch Alias on the ABC Family re-broadcast. I am still mad at them for cancelling Once & Again.
