The subject says it all....I bought a replacement grill grid last summer, and decided to get a cast iron one because I hate the cheap little porcelin (sp) grids.

I seasoned it per their instructions (wipe on cooking oil and cooked for a couple of hours). However I still get rust coating the grill grate. I try brushing it off with a wire BBQ brush, and coating the grid with Crisco, bake again, but I'm still getting powdery rust on the grid.

I've been reading that soda water will help clean off the rust (easier and cleaner than sticky Coke which several sites have said).

Does anyone have any suggestions as far as cleaning and preventing the rust?

I don't want to cook on it for fear the rust will do more harm than good.

Thanks for your help

A buddy of mine cuts a slice of an onion and pushes it back and forth across the grill (while it's burning). I think the "juice" coming from the onion is acidic enough to help cut through some of the grime. I don't know if this would help with rust, though.
