As described in our Home Theater Forum 2/27
Newsletter being emailed out later today....
DVD ETC. magazine is looking for the
opinions of Home Theater Forum members for
their premier issue this May.
The question is.....

"You have just purchased your first DVD player,
what DVD's should you purchase first and why?"

VERY IMPORTANT....
So that the answers can be quickly compiled...
* List your top 3 titles with reasons. These
reasons can range from MENU DESIGN, TRANSFER
QUALITY, AUDIO QUALITY, UNIQUE FEATURES, etc.
* Make answers brief and to the point.
* Do not ask questions or make any further
comments that sway from the purpose of this poll.
Please do not respond to other people's answers --
just post your response.
On behalf of DVD ETC. magazine, we wish
to thank all of you in advance.

* 2001: A Space Odyssey--because it is my all-time favorite film and because Warner's new 16:9-enhanced transfer is gorgeous.

* Zardoz--a quirky SF film that's also a major personal favorite, and because Fox produced this DVD as a result of lobbying efforts by Home Theater Forum members.

* Citizen Kane--because it is the greatest film ever made and Warner has given this DVD boxset the lavish treatment (and transfer) it deserves.

Spartacus: Criterion Collection - great picture and sound, worth while extras, including a wonderful audio commentary, stylish and effective menu design.
2001: - A Space Odyssey I can't explain how good both the picture and sound are on this disc, it is a must have. There are no extras, but the quality in all other areas more than makes up for that.
Fight Club - this disc really shows how good a disc can be when all the right elements are in place: a supportive studio, a dedicated director, an enthusiastic DVD producer. Picture and sound are top notch, along with 4 excellent audio commenataries.

Toy Story Ultimate Toy Box. Great transfers, and great audio, especially Toy Story 2. Also chock full of fun and informative extra features. A terrific value. A wonderful box set that truly shows off the possibilities of the DVD format.
Terminator 2 Ultimate Edition. Another film school in a box. Loaded with extra features including DTS audio and seamless branching. Will make you learn about easter eggs. Also an entertaining movie. Very good transfer and soundtrack.
Almost Famous Director’s Edition. Gives you the choice of watching the original theatrical presentation or the Director’s cut with 39 minutes of new footage. The new footage adds significantly to the original movie by filling in some plot lines and enhancing character development. DTS audio included in the original theatrical presentation. A very innovative extra included about Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven. If you like classic rock from the 70s, get this 2 disc set. Another great transfer and soundtrack.

1. Star Wars Episode I : Excellent sound mix, nifty menus that change every time you insert the disc, and very well done documentaries, such as "The Beginning"

2. Fantasia 2000 : The sound and video transfer will blow you away. A truly reference disc.

3. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs : Shows how interactive a DVD can be, with interactive tours and documentaries that show the making of the movie from beginning to end. Plus, this DVD shows how a movie that is 65 years old can look and sound amazing!
