Have a Denon soundbar hooked up to me Samsung Smart TV. Have some difficulty with audio at normal volume when watching TV shows or the news. Would separate center channel and R/L speakers be better for me. I don't think I have a hearing problem though my wife thinks I am deaf. More trouble with bass than treble.

I have no idea what would help - “difficulty” is a pretty vague description. We’ve had people come here asking similar questions, claiming the sound was muffled, was breaking up, the upper midrange was piercing, sounded like it was coming from the bottom of a barrel, and I’ve probably forgotten what all else. Precisely what kind of “difficulty” are you experiencing?

Depending on your seating arrangement a pair of speakers, center and a receiver might be helpful but it's hard to say. Maybe you're over driving the small speakers that come in most soundbars and that is causing the audio to sound bad. Going with an AVR and speakers will give you the ability to boost the center level which might help. However, without knowing more about your setup it's just hard to say.

My problem is with dialogue/spoken word. Could be my ears but I seem to hear better when viewing other people's TVs. As far as overdriving the speakers they are simply drawing the audio from the TV via digital cable. The TV gets it,s input directly from my cable box, no receiver involved.

The overdriving happens when you turn up the soundbar too high for the internal amplifier causing the speakers to sound bad. It has nothing to do with an AVR.

Do you find that you can hear better with just the TV speakers?

Does the Denon soundbar have bass and treble controls? If so have you tried to adjust those levels so that you're getting more mid range instead of bass and treble?

Have you tried turning off any kind of surround mode on the soundbar and running it in just a stereo mode?
