Sophie Barthes' Madame Bovary, based upon the mid-19th century novel by Gustave Flaubert is an odd duck.
Beautifully produced, around lovingly photographed locations, and supremely expensive costumes worn by Mia Wasikowska, I came away finding it a two hour dud. I couldn't quite put my finger on the problem(s), but was initially thinking that Miss Wasikowska may not have been up to the challenge -- she never seems to inhabit her character, and like the other actors, seem to be merely reading their lines, with two dimensional performances. It could be the screenplay. Or the direction. Not certain, but the final result is flat.
The film was shot in Techniscope (35/2), and the resultant Blu-ray via a 2k DI, seems like nice HD quality, but nothing is to be gained in 4k.
There was a single shot the caught my eye. An extremely long shot of Miss W, running through the countryside, with the camera tracking her from quite a distance away. Nice. At other times, especially in the opening shots, the camera not being tied down, somehow seemed inappropriate the the scene.
