My copy of the 50th Anniverary edition of MFL arrived this morning.

I'll wait till the weekend to view the main movie .. a special gathering is planned, and I'm sure we'll love it.

But I thought a new thread might be useful to let any news appear about whether there's going to be a recall for the faulty second disc .. with all the tantalising extras.

First off, I'll just state that I love the ritzy packaging. And my copy holds the discs securely and they are easy to remove.

BUT .. in common with many others here, my second disc is a total dud. On my Toshiba player, I can make it to the Special Features menu page, but it locks up tight there. On my Oppo, I get the opening fanfare, then the disc just switches right off. Both players are of course locked on Region A,

I'm loth to return the whole package to Amazon as I want to keep the feature disc. And I'm leaving for a European holiday (Spain and Italy) after the weekend so returning the faulty disc will have to wait till mid-December.

Hopefully, by then there'll be some news here about what to do, and when I want those extra features! How sad that after such a long wait, we get bollixed by what must be either faulty design or faulty manufacture. There obviously was insufficient quality control .. very sad especially after such effort on the part of RAH and his cohorts.....

Thanks for starting this thread, Anthony! What a shame the ball got dropped at the manufacturing level! I'll be following this HTF topic closely, for sure!

I'm really hoping my replacement copy is free from this issue. How strange that some people have gotten problem-free copies of the set.

I don't think getting non-defective discs should be considered strange. Wasn't that the intended outcome?

Mine worked without incident. Unfortunate whatever percentage have defective copies.

I found a workaround for my Oppo player that seems to work so far: reboot the player and play the extras disc immediately and it seems to play fine. Problems occur if another disc, especially the main feature, is played beforehand.

Have you also tried clearing Persistent Storage? If that does nothing, you could also try writing down your settings and doing a Factory Reset, and of course have the latest firmware.

I echo Dr. Griffin on this. A few people reported that they got a firmware message when they tried to play the disc. If you're not set up for automatic updates, is it possible you might need to manually update?

Might turning off BD Live help?

So it appears that the issue regarding the MFL50 Bonus Blu-ray isn't a physical defect, but rather an undocumented compatibility/firmware update requirement?

If that's the case, my thought is, why wasn't this caught before last week's release? At the very least, there should have been a liner notes disclaimer stating "Some Blu-ray playback devices may require a firmware update to access some of the bonus features," or something to that effect! I shudder at the thought of how many MFL50 units may have already been needlessly shipped back/returned by consumers who understandably assumed their Bonus Blu-ray Disc was defective!

I've seen Amazon pull items (Temporarily) over lesser issues. The combined reported Packaging/Bonus Blu-ray issues could prove a real CF if not properly dealt with, especially regarding the latter!

I believe that caveat phrase is presumed at this point in the history of the format. Newer players with wi-fi will automatically give an alert, if the function is turned on. Others should be checked occasionally to see if they have the latest firmware.

What specific players are causing problems? Model numbers please, along with latest firmware.

Oppo BDP-103 with latest firmware update dated 2014 (connected via wifi with automatic firmware updates).

The disc usually stops after selecting something from the main menu when the disc is played after the feature disc has been played. After the player's power is recycled, the disc seems to play fine.

No issues with playback on either of my BD players, a Sony S6500 and a Samsung H5900, both with up-to-date firmware.

Disc One (the feature) was a floater when I opened mine, but it is undamaged. For some reason it won't stay in the slot, so I had it exchange places with the DVD, which I probably will never watch.

I had to do the same thing. The bluray feature would not stay in its slot. Had to be moved to another slot.

I have the Oppo BDP-103 too and both the first and second discs played fine on my machine.
