At CEDIA 2015, Sony announced two new UHD HDR projectors.

The VPL-W5000ES was announced as the industry’s first 4K laser projector designed specifically for home theaters. The 4K laser is supposed to produce 5K lumens of brightness and is the first 4K laser to support HDR. What is interesting about Sony's announcement of HDR is that they specifically called out support for REC. 2020 and the DCI-P3 color gamut that is used widely in movie theaters. This is in contrast to many manufacturers that are only stating a color gamut wider than REC. 709. The projector also supports HDMI 2.0a and HDCP 2.2 and the HDMI input accepts 4K 60 fps video up to TCbCr 4:4:4 8-bit or YCbCr 4:2:2 12-bit to handle future video formats. The MSRP for the VPL-W5000ES is $59,999 and is due out next spring.

The other HDR projector announced at the show is the VPL-VW665ES. This PJ is a lamp based UHD HDR projector that claims a a 300,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, SXRD panels, HDMI 2.0a, and HDCP 2.2. It isn't exactly clear if this projector supports REC 2020 or the DCI-P3 color gamut. However, the projector is shipping now and comes in at $14,999.

We will try to get the VPL-VW665ES in for a review once there are BD UHD HDR players and titles available.

Anyone up for purchasing the VPL-VW665ES?

These prices are going the wrong way! I thought we'd already got below the $15k price point and were heading towards $10k or even $5k.
