In the new house we're building I'm planning on installing a ceiling-mount projector in our media room. To it I will be connecting my Apple TV, XB1, DIRECTV box, and surround speakers (or soundbar). Is there an alternative to connect these components to the projector other than an old-school bulky receiver? Thanks!

The "old school bulky receiver" is what you're supposed to use.

Projectors are not designed to be the hub of a system. You won't be able to connect sources and speakers to any decent home theater projector.

You're much better off using components as they are meant to be used and projectors are meant to be used as a display only. There should be two cables running to a projector: power and a single HDMI.

Where on earth did you get the idea that receivers are old-school? Sure, they’ve been around for decades, but nothing has replaced them as far as getting the best surround sound. Sound bars are a poor substitute for surround sound, and as you’ve already realized have limited functionality due to their inability to handle video signals.
