So I am looking to get the Star Wars set that features either ONLY the original version if the first trilogy in widescreen OR a set that has both the ORIGINAL versions and the reworked version in widescreen

I can't tell from the Amazon listing which packaging I should look for and they lumped the reviews for all versions together.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!!

The last time the original trilogy was released was on Laserdisc in the late 90's. Lucas likes and approves of the reworked versions only because they tie in with Episodes 1-3 better. He seems to want to erase the original versions. So no one can say for sure if the original trilogy will ever be officially released again.

Hmmm. Never realized that. I have the Original trilogy in the box set from when it was first released on DVD in 2004 and it did not include the copies of the original versions that you mentioned. I do still have my Laserdiscs of the Originals.

Not sure why this is in the TV section, but If you really want to see the original Star Wars Trilogy, you might want to do a search for Petr Harmy's Despecialized Editions.

The DVDs are just the laser disc ports.
And they look just as bad as the laserdiscs do (on modern displays). They are not enhanced for widescreen tv's.

The laserdisc audio is so much better than the DVD audio on those original versions that I've never sat down to watch those DVD's without giving up and switching to the laserdiscs. I do have the Special Edition laserdisc box set as well, but I've never done the laserdisc switcheroo with the Blu-Ray.

You mean the sound on the ports right? Yeah they sound terrible. But the audio on the SE DVDs sound s lot better than the lasers imo. Plus the DVD quality is so much better than the laser I always choose them. Miss those lasers tho. Lost them and almost all my lasers in a flood. [emoji20]

I'm only referring to the original 1993 CAV laserdisc box set, magnificent beast that it still is. What I'm doing right now is watching the Special Edition laserdisc box set, which has AC-3 audio, to compare the audio with the DVD and with the Blu-Ray audio. I don't expect the picture to come close, though looking up from my laptop, it's pretty watchable. My understanding is that the Special Editions of the Star Wars Trilogy, as shown in theatres in 1997 (I saw all three back then) and reproduced on the laserdisc box set I have, were further tweaked for the DVD and even further tweaked for the Blu-Ray. For me, keeping everything as long as possible remains the best policy. I'll report back later on the audio.

I think I paid $250 for that Star Wars CAV SET when it came out in '93 I believe. That's why I never complain about the price of blu Rays![emoji12]

A quick comment: the picture quality on those Star Wars DVD's is really good, about as good as DVD gets. Another quick comment: based on what I saw tonight, I think that each time they were prepping these movies for a new format, they were also busy adding more digital background creatures, people, things, and effects. Now the audio comparison: the AC-3 laserdisc audio sounds great, and the mix on those laserdiscs is different from the later formats. For example, when Obi-Wan chases the Sand People away by making that animal roar, it comes from the left rear speaker on the AC-3, while on the Blu-Ray it comes from the left front speaker, and it isn't as much of a roar. The Blu-Ray audio is superior to the laserdisc or the DVD audio; it's more open and clean. But every audio track on all three formats is powerful, with ample bass. Now I think I'll go back and enjoy the best versions of these movies on the 1993 laserdisc with PCM 2.0 surround sound, and wish that the worst versions weren't all that was available on Blu-Ray, the best format.

Can someone tell me what the difference is between the silver cover DVDs released in 2004 and the gold cover 2006 editions? I'm mean in general terms.

The only difference is that the 2006 releases have the original version of each movie on a second disc (they're all non-anamorphic 1993 laserdisc transfers). The first disc in each of the 2006 releases is the same exact discs from the 2004 set.

Unfortunately, the 2006 releases don't have the fourth disc from the 2004 set which had a wonderful documentary and other extras.
