SYNOPSIS
From the accomplished theater director James Lapine (Into The Woods) comes Impromptu, his directorial film debut, and one that could very well be called When Chopin Met Sand. A delightful, witty and beautifully crafted film,Impromptu brings together a number of historical figures of the arts & letters variety who trade bon mots at a breakneck pace in this effervescent romp. The ambitious, social climbing Duchess d’Antan’s (Emma Thompson, Love Actually), salon for the “artists of the moment,” brings face-to-face the wildly unconventional and recently divorced Baroness Dupin AKA author George Sand (Judy Davis, Husbands and Wives) and the object of her unbridled affection -- the talented, introspective and highly sensitive composer Frederic Chopin (Hugh Grant,Four Weddings and A Funeral). These are but two shining stars in a galaxy of 19th Century glitterati that includes composer Franz Liszt (Julian Sands, A Room With A View), French poet, dramatist and author Alfred de Musset (Mandy Patinkin, Homeland) and painter Eugene Delacroix (Ralph Brown, Alien 3).

However with acting jobs in short supply the unconventional Andy will become conventional when he learns that he’ll be a father.

With Andy’s dreams all but dashed, triumph will come not on the boards, but in the wrestling ring. Taking a page from the flamboyant wrestler Gorgeous George, Andy creates a persona - The Lover - that will bring him great acclaim. When his outsized persona overshadows his personal life it will strain his fragile marriage, friendships and the already tense relationship with his resistant in-laws.

Brad here. I'm in for:

The One & Only (1977): Henry Winkler on a break from being "The Fonz". You will die laughing at times and other times its a bit slow. But a winner in my book, especially featuring Kim Darby (Miri from Star Trek TOS).

Sometimes They Come Back (1991): Never seen this, missed it in theaters but its been on my wish list. Glad its coming to Blu.

How many times in this discussion forum (and elsewhere) have I (personally) lobbied for a quality widescreen blu-ray stateside release of DR. TERROR'S HOUSE OF HORRORS (1965)?!

Now it finally comes to fruition and about time.

I hope that some extra bonus material is included like the original theatrical trailer (at the very least).

But naturally I am very delighted with this pleasing revelation.

A great way to celebrate Halloween 2015. Pleasant dreams!

Another list of Olive releases, another list of premium-priced, extras-free movies that would have been better served by Kino, Shout/Scream or Twilight Time. I'm particularly bummed about PHASE IV— you'd think that any distributor would go out of their way to include the recently-discovered original ending.

Okay, those looks considerably less goofy than Cannon's other efforts:

I agree wholeheartedly. This is an impressive roster of films, but I would be happy with half of the quantity in return for some quality extras. PHASE IV has a rather startling original ending, adding about six minutes, which delves much deeper into the mystical aspect of the ants and their ultimate intentions, and is visually very striking, as you would expect from Mr. Bass. Yes, it has been uncovered and is available for viewing (in rather poor quality) on You Tube:

A theatrical trailer would be at least something for these Olive releases. Their retail price is exactly what Kino's and Twilight Time's and Shout!'s is, but remain the only niche distributor to bring nothing extra to the table.

Nice to get the movies, and a fair number of them look pretty good, but they seem to be merely thrown out there without regard to condition or added value, and thus end up being worth less to me, mostly not worth a purchase. Maybe a rental. But I see that they are giving us Paramount titles again. PHASE IV is about as strange a movie as is out there, but it's also a cult classic and completely absorbing. I've always liked it a lot. Saw it on a drive-in double bill with THE GIANT SPIDER INVASION. Guess which of the two I'd prefer to have on my shelf?

I'm very excited about IMPROMPTU as well! It's listed as mono, but unless my memory has completely failed me, I'm pretty sure it had a Dolby stereo soundtrack.

There's no doubt that the UK import of Dr. Terror is the version to get. For about the same price as Olive's release, you get a deluxe edition of the film in an attractive steelbook and a documentary, among other extras. Plus, and this is just speculation on my part, the UK release will feature a restored transfer - something that the Olive release may not include. I appreciate Olive bringing many of these forgotten films to Blu-ray but they really should look into hiring an in-house production team to create some extras.Thirty bucks for barebones releases is asking for trouble.

Now that I've seen that youtube clip of Phase IV's lost ending I suddenly don't feel the same way about Olive including it in their upcoming release. My curiosity has been sufficiently satisfied :)

That is a horrible cover. I've been in the I'm not buying the cover but the film category, but this one is causing me to re-examine my thought.

Oh sorry the cover got to me I did not read the post. This is a another Blu-Ray. Got it now. Sorry, but that damn cover is atrocious.

I have the old Legend Films blu-ray of Mandingo; the only special feature on it is a still gallery - something that will likely not be on the upcoming Olive Films blu.

S'okay Allen. That cover didn't do anything for me either. ;)

The impetus for my question though is the fact that this title isn't "New to Blu-ray". It's still widely available on Blu-ray dirt cheap, so what is gained by this upcoming Olive release? Have they, or Paramount, done a new transfer*? Improved artwork alone wouldn't be enough of a carrot for me.

* which it certainly needs.

It would be nice if Paramount had revisited Mandingo. It's hard to believe that a major studio like Paramount and an A list director like Fleischer ever produced something like Mandingo, and with such a cast. You would expect Italians to come up with this, and they did of course, but not Hollywood.

It and its sequel Drum are true guilty pleasures. I'll await reviews to see if an upgrade of the Legend BD is worth the money.

Nice to see that they are also releasing A Black Veil for Lisa, a giallo I've never seen before.
