Frank Gifford, one of the most popular sportscasters in television history, is dead at 84. Best known for ABC's Monday Night Football, he also made guest appearances on shows like The San Pedro Bums and Coach. Mr. Gifford was also the hero of Frederick Exley's classic novel, A Fan's Notes.

Here he was from Monday Night Football in the 1985 season, on a broadcast between Green Bay and Chicago (captured from the 1985 Chicago Bears 12-game DVD release from Warner Bros.).

Not only was Frank Gifford an iconic broadcaster, but he also was a Hall of Famer as a player. He still holds the NY Giants career scoring record. The word "legend" gets overused these days, but it is not out of place describing the Giffer. I found out about the news while watching the PGA golf tournament on CBS. Jim Nantz was clearly struggling with his emotions as he made the announcement that Gifford had passed away and gave a synopsis of his career. The amount of respect he had for the man was very apparent.

RIP, Mr. Gifford.
