John,

The only pick of your that I cannot get behind is Buffalo. I know that Rex Ryan has won with poor quarterbacks in the past, but I do not think he had a situation as bad as the Bills at anytime in New York.

Here are my preliminary picks:

NFC Division winners:

Green Bay

Seattle

Carolina

Dallas

Wildcards: Arizona, NY Giants

AFC Division winners:

Indy (I think they may have already clinched ;) )

New England

Pittsburgh (homer pick)

Kansas City

Wildcards: Baltimore, Miami

I cannot fathom any scenario where the Colts do not win that division -- even if Andrew Luck should get hurt. They are a solid team, and their competition is absolutely horrible.

There are a few young, rebuilding teams that could surprise and sneak in -- Minnesota, Tampa (if Winston produces like Cam Newton in his rookie year), Oakland and the Rams should all be interesting to watch.

As for my local team, many of the local fans are once again drinking the Lions Kool-Aid after an 11-win season last year. I just do not see this team being very good, though. They did not add anything significant to the roster, yet lost all their defensive tackles -- including their best defensive player in Suh. They also benefited hugely from a super-easy schedule last year, where only 1 of their 11 wins came against a team that finished with a winning record... and they also lost to that same team (Green Bay). Add in the fact that Matt Stafford has never won a road game against a team with a winning record in his entire career, and I think this team will be fighting the Bears to stay out of last place.

No doubt. It is also a depressing stat if you follow the Lions at all.

I agree the Bears and the Lions will probably be fighting to stay out of last, but I think the NFC North is going to be one of the better divisions, if not the best, and they both will be close to .500.

But you know I don't blame Stafford for this. Football is a team sport and so I think overall it has been a problem with the team. Along with QBs I think the other item that is in short supply in the NFL is really good coaches. You know if Bill Belichick coached the Lions with the talent they have had for the last several years I think he would have won division titles and maybe went to a Super Bowl. The Lions seem to be a team that lacks in the leadership department both on the field and in management. I think they have brought in talented players and then can't seem to get together a strategy to win with them. My dad is a Lions fan going back to the days of Bobby Layne.

He grew up in Michigan and told me all kinds of Bobby Layne stories growing up. Packers/Lions Thanksgiving day games have always been huge in my family.

Well, with the induction of the new enshrines into the Pro Football Hall of Fame this evening, another football season is officially upon us.

I am looking forward to this season more so than any other, I must admit, in recent memory.

And I must admit, Dheiner and Scott, that I actually find it refreshing that anyone is selecting a team other than Denver to win the AFC West--apparently, Peyton Manning's return seems to mean an automatic AFC West championship per the media experts.

I also like your call on Oakland as a possible surprise sneak-in, Scott. ;)

Either way, I see an interesting NFL season coming upon us in the months ahead!!!! :)

With the Lions, it starts with the ownership, as I've mentioned many times before. The team has won exactly one post season game since the Ford family took over sole ownership of the franchise over 50 years ago -- that's half a century to you and me, Rusty! I'm not sure much has changed since William Clay Ford, Sr. died last year, although it is impossible for his son to be as incompetent as Ford, Sr. The front office is essentially the same as it's been since the start of the Matt Millen era, just without that boob running things. After the team went 0-16 and Millen had resigned, any respectable ownership would have cleaned house. Instead, everyone got promoted, including the current GM Martin Mayhew, who is only a good GM in comparison to Millen -- but not in comparison to the rest of the league. After all, a monkey flinging its own crap at a draft board could have made better decisions than Millen.

I'm not sure it's Jets dysfunction. This player that was cut immediately after the incident, shouldn't be playing in the NFL any time soon.

This player has to be one of the dumbest guys in the NFL. Sucker-punching the starting QB is never a good career move, especially when you are an easily replaced bench player.

Worst organization in the league IMO! I put up with their crap for damn near 20 years before I finally bailed on them before the start of last season! They are hopeless!

Rex Ryan is such an idiot! The Bills owners got suckered in by his personality just like Woody Johnson did! There is nothing good coming the Bill's way!
I have to agree with you. He's a good defensive coordinator, but he's over his head as a head coach. No pun intended.

Well, you punch your starting QB in the face because he owes you $600.00 knocking him out of action for up to 10 weeks, you get released immediately, within 5 minutes Rex Ryan calls you and gives you a job with just two small requests...he just wants you to change your name from IK Enemkpali to KO Enemkpali and punch E.J. Manual in the face...and done.
