Classic TV Shows Possibly Coming to BLU-RAY For The 2015 Holiday Season? (1 Viewer)

I just went to the HighDefdigest.com Blu-Ray Release page where I check out to see what Blu-Rays are being released in the future. They are usually about 90% accurate in their announcements. At the bottom of the web page they have a "pending date" list of Blu Rays that have not been announced yet. When titles appear on this page, they usually are announced within a month of them appearing on the list. If they don't get released, they tend to stay in the "pending" list indefinitely or they get moved to another list above the "pending" list called "postponed". I recently notice that there are 5 classic tv shows appearing in the pending list. Now, I don't want to get anyone's hopes up too high....so let's just call this a "rumor" instead of "fact" for now......but these are the series (all complete btw) that looks like they MIGHT pop up for release on Blu-ray this holiday season:


1.) "Seinfeld" - The Complete Series (Sony)

2.) "Bewitched" - The Complete Series (Sony)

3.) "I Dream Of Jeannie" - The Complete Series (Sony)

4.) "Hogan's Heroes" - The Complete Series (I think this is CBS/Paramount.....however it has the TBA in parenthesis where the studio name is).

5.) "Everybody Loves Raymond" - The Complete Series (I know this is an HBO/Time Warner series, but this too has TBA in parenthesis where the studio name is).


Again, please don't take this as "Fact".....more of a "Rumor". I just noticed that these shows recently appeared on the High Def Digest's pending list and with the holiday season announcements coming up.....some of these may come into light. Also I know that "I Dream Of Jeannie", "Hogan's Heroes" and "Bewitched" are all in their 50th anniversary year....so maybe they are doing something special by releasing them to Blu-Ray? Don't know.....just guessing. But fingers crossed for anyone who wants these shows on Blu-Ray.....I know I want at least 4 of these 5 shows. Here is the link to the highdefdigest.com site:

If Sony puts out Bewitched and Jeannie, I hope they at least have the sense to restore the ORIGINAL opening theme music to both instead of the S1 theme and S3 respectively that have been used for the color episodes of each for decades in syndication.

Given how few non-current shows get released on Blu-ray and the few that do are almost all cult/sci-fi shows, I think Seinfeld is a long shot and the rest are all but impossible.

Looking at that list, I think Hogan's Heroes seems like a longshot, and it just depends on the others. Since the others are all owned by Sony, the question would be whether they are coming from Sony themselves (which would be a longshot since they don't seem to release much of any Tv shows anymore), or whether they might be coming out from Mill Creek (where the chances are probably much higher, although we would probably at best get what they already released on DVD, just with better picture).

And also to present the black-and-white episodes that way. And restoring the correct Screen Gems logos should take very little effort.

if I remember correctly Hogan was being shown on HDnet in a faux Hi Def 16x9 format, most of these shows probably have hi def masters but I doubt they would relase them that way, look at Hawaii Five O and Rockford Files they are on Netflix in Hi Def, but not on Disc and I think that trend will continue as the streaming services will get Hi def versions, For those mentioned I'm more than happy with the DVD versions , although I bet Jeannie would look great in HD

Even Mill Creek has been know to discontinue bluray season sets of tv shows they released.


The first two seasons of "That '70s Show" were released on bluray by Mill Creek. But since then, they appear to be discontinued with no further releases.


(All eight seasons of "That '70s Show" was released on bluray in Germany).

My original source also lists "Two And A Half Men" (Warner Brothers) for complete series on Blu-ray (also as "pending" release date). Wondering if Mill Creek is going to be a force in the tv show on Blu-Ray market for the holidays? With Mill Creek releasing the complete series of "That 70's Show", I am wondering the possibility of "Seinfeld", "Bewitched" and "Jeannie" since they are all Sony products which Mill Creek has released some of these on DVD before? Time will tell.

Provide Mill Creek continues their practice of issuing the same number of Titles per BD as they do with DVD (Which unfortunately tends toward over capacity for the latter format!), any foray into Blu-ray be them would be most welcome by me!

IIRC, the Mill Creek bluray versions of seasons 1 and 2 of "That 70's Show" were each 4-disc sets.

Not to argue, but I'd hardly call Seinfeld or Everybody Loves Raymond "classic" TV. I know everyone has their own opinions and tastes, but Seinfeld can't hold a candle to a good written comedy like The Phil Silvers Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show or even lighter hearted fare like The Beverly Hillbillies; Jerry Seinfeld just isn't funny like people put him up to be. Everybody Loves Raymond is a cute show, but again, I'd be hard pressed to call it classic.


Constantly Being Stalled does have the rights to Hogan's Heroes unless they're licensing it out. I was actually thinking yesterday that it might have a future on blu due to it already being released as a full series. I'd purchase it in a heartbeat!

Seinfeld is the I Love Lucy of its day. Much like Lucy, people will still revere and watch Seinfeld decades from now.

I must disagree. Many don't like Seinfeld's humor, but I think his show is the funniest sitcom of its time and one of the funniest of all time. I've seen most episodes multiple times and I still laugh every time. I do think that the first few seasons have some weak episodes, but starting in Season 4, almost every episode is a classic.

The key point is "many." I've failed to meet too many people who thought Lucy humorless. I think sometimes other comedians of that era are overlooked in comparison, but she was a true genius. See me in 50 or 60 years and let's see if Seinfeld is still in the same conversation as Lucy.

There's no comparison. Lucy is the queen of comedy and is a legend. Seinfeld is just a very funny comedian who happened to create a funny show.


No one compares to Lucy's stature as a television icon. My point was that I think Seinfeld's show is extremely funny. My opinion, of course.

Regardless of quality (I've never seen Seinfeld, so I don't know), it's much too soon for me to think of a program from the 1990's or later as classic tv.


To me, many of those that think so, simply haven't viewed anything older. They either don't even realize or simply don't care that there's nearly a half century of television history that predates the last 25 years of television programming.


I'll probably never think of such a show as a classic simply because of my own taste in television (There's a handful I think I'd like, but Frasier is the only one that ran into the 2000's that I'm familiar with). But I think even if I loved such a show, I wouldn't consider it as classic tv as of yet.

You seem to be comparing Jerry Seinfeld the stand-up comedian and Seinfeld the TV show. Personally, I find Jerry Seinfeld to be an OK stand-up but I find Seinfeld the show to be a masterpiece and a show that can proudly stand with anything else that has ever been on TV.

Seinfeld is actually 26 years old now. I'm basically in agreement with you that it's early to say that a relatively young show like Seinfeld is a classic but a great show is a great show and given its quality, cultural impact and influence, I'm fully comfortable with saying that Seinfeld is a classic. Unlike most people here who seemingly haven't actively watched TV in more than 30 years (and yet somehow know that all new shows are bad), I have seen a broad more range of the shows from all eras of TV so I do realize and do care about the first 50 years of the medium and recent shows.

I'm definitely onboard for Hogan's Heroes.
